Hey everyone,
hope this isnt a dumb question but is it safe to use E10 fuel in my non turbo 3.0L Soarer. I asked Toyota and they had no clue...so i figured hopefully someone here would know.
With the price of fuel rising and our lovely premier removing the fuel subsidy it would help if i could use E10. But on the same token i dont want to stuff my engine.

I use 10% Ethanol 98 unleaded in my '96 JZZ31 and have been doing so for over a year now with no problems. I replaced my fuel filter last week and did a inspection of all the fuel lines through to the injectors while I was at it, I could see no visual signs of problems. The car actually seems to run better on the 98 Ethanol blend than it does on BP 98!
Sure was surprised at what it did to the handle on my ratchet drive though! Melted it in seconds!

I wouldn't-my v8 runs well on it, but the fuel gauge stuffs up, then when it gets near 10L, she coughs and splutters, it's crap. I've run out of fuel twice in the last two weeks because of that now I'm sticking with 98. No problems whatsoever

I recently put about 20litres of E85 in my tank and it completely messed up the fuel gauge for a while. As the gauge is based on measuring the capacitance (at least in GTTL-models), it can't handle E85.
As for the engine, everything was ok with this roughly 50-50 mixture of 98E and E85. After a few full tanks of normal 98E, the fuel gauge started to work normally too.

From 95 to 98 ron should be little difference in mileage, the ron number is it's resistance to detonation, so it is better to use 98 on a turbo Soarer, where a V8 it probably doesn't matter as much.

The JZZ31 does not use the impedance fuel meter, just a standard float system (70 litre tank) so its quite accurate with E10. I can run my tank down to the last bar on the low level meter with no problems.
I do find I get better mileage out of '98 compared to '95. It does make a difference as retareded ignition timing increases fuel usage. Its definitely enough of a difference to make up for the extra cost per litre.

anything ive put it in hasnt worked the best and also fuel gauge problems and a few fuel pump failures at work due to the ethanol absorbing more water. i have a few mates running 85% in their rotaries making good power but if you leave it a week or so without use the fuel absorbs too much water to use. personally i wouldnt use it. and never use it in a boat motor!!

Second that on the gauge problem. Filled up on e10 a few times and every time I did the gauge would play up. Then my friend showed me what e10 done to stainless steel gauze filter that they use in the fuel pumps(a mixture of rust and corrosion after only a week) Also if you have a little bit of water in your tank it seperates the fuel from the ethanol
