Hey guys i have no idea whats wrong with my car, havent been able to sure it for 2 weeks now as my mechanics (only other person i trust with my car) dad past away. Anyway spent the better part of the day eliminating potential problems. Now ive noticed a few other thing and im thinking its either the diff or transmission. Anyway symptoms are at low speed (0-30km/hr) there is this whinning noise that comes from the left rear wheel it would seem. The noise only happens in first gear and doesnt occur once it gets into second gear/ higher speeds. Diff hasnt got a rattle at all, is able to do a stand still without any whinning or flying around so it seems alright that its not blown. The other thing i noticed is that if i throw it into low gear the the noise is constant (so 1st gear obviously) . Anyone got any ideas as to what it potentially be?

A few things that i though it would be but eliminated today is broken wheel studs and the wheel wobbling around. The noise it makes is like metal on metal contact, sort of like when using the brakes for the first time after washing your car. Also though it might be a sticking piston in the caliper or that it might be semi seized on the rotor. That was it, diff makes no weird noises, trans doesnt rattle at all or make noise when driving or going through the gears whilst standing still.

So if anyone has had these symptoms or has any idea as to what the potential cause could be that would be great.

Cheers

It could be a wheel bearing, and you only hear it in 1st gear because when going faster in higher gears the sound is left behind the car?

this can be dangerous so be careful

but have you tried jacking up the rear of the car so both wheels aren't touching the ground starting the engine and putting it drive and then listening to the wheel as it spins?

might help diagnose where the sound is coming from. does sound like wheel bearing though

Done the obvious and rotated your tyres to make sure its no uneven where ..

It is really pronounced or would you have to be the owner to hear it?

I had an issue like this with the Torana a while back - just pull out the axels and greased them up :-) .. not sure how'd you go about this with a Soarer.

Could even be a brake dust shield touching the disk.

Yeah i thought that aswell but i had a look from where i though it was coming from and doesnt look to be anything touching the rotor or the hub as it spins.
