Hey all, I've just put an FMIC on my single turbo JZZ30, it's running well at about 14psi but I want to fit a trans cooler in the factory intercooler location. Would a regular oil cooler be fine or do I have to get a specific cooler for the transmission? The only difference I can see is the size of the hose fittings.

i am certain that the intercooler will hold far too much fluid compared to a specific 7 or 9 row oil cooler. lol

and you will definitely need to weld on custom end tanks with the correct fittings or cap the factory outlets and drill and tap fittings into the tanks.

too much hassle, fabrication costs wont justify it. better off buying a specific oil cooler and fittings, less chance of springing a leak or something else go wrong.

huh?? Nobody said ANYTHING bout using the stocko SMIC for the tranny cooler Wally! hahah,
*all good*

Yeh mate- just buy ANY oil cooler and it will work a charm. I went to the wreckers and bought one off an older model Mitsubishi Magna and it was perfect. Just bought some hoses to suit and BAM and easy install all round.

Might be a little chilly in NZ anyways for a BIG tranny cooler and could make things worse perhaps? I dunno... ill let the other lads debate that one.

I have a nice big PWR trans cooler with thermo fan mounted where the stock SMIC was . I have the fan run on a relay and switch so i can turn it off when freeway cruising .

These transmissions dont like to run with the fluid too cold, so what i ended up doing, was running ;-
-

from my Transmission > PWR cooler > Stock cooler in radiator > back to Transmission .

If the external cooler cools it down too much , passing it through the stock radiator cooler will, in theory, get the fluid back up into the optimum operating zone .

Walter you also need to pay a wee bit more attention to my first post - I have and had no intentions of filling my standard intercooler with oil LOL I asked what cooler to fit in the location of the standard cooler AFTER it has been removed haha.

So, any oil cooler will do?

lol full sentence dyslexia is what i put it down too. i read the whole post, just mixed it up a bit and skipped some words in my head when writing the reply. lol.

i'm not 100% sure on that one, but i dont see why not. fittings can be bought specifically if you dont buy a kit.

daniel? what size fittings did you use?

I don't get it? What is the point even using another cooler when the stock one will cool it down? Or does it not cool it down as much and needs help from a second unit?

i was thinking the same thing. why cool it down to bring it up to temp?

can you notice the effect the oil cooler has on the engine temp? since they exchange heat with one another in the radiator. ie stays at operating temp even after a hard thrashing? cooler oil would draw the heat from the engine coolant allowing the oil cooler to effectively aid in cooling the engine coolant.

The stock one wont cool it down enough Justin . for a stock car it may be ok, but once you have a raised stally ( like i do ) the fluid gets hotter and especially when racing, the oil will raise in temp so hot, the stock one wont drop the temp enough .

I havent had any dramas using this setup .

I just used the same as stock pipe sizing . i think 3/8 ?

Might be worth putting in a cheap temp gauge to see what's going on. 170-200F is considered a healthy temp for most transmissions.

I put a cooler kit into my wifes car last year - it was something like $150 and came with all the fittings and hoses included, with several different sizes (claimed to be "universal fit" - certanly didn't have any problems matching up to my wifes Primera) - was very easy to fit, took me about an hour, and would have been quicker except getting the hoses thru to the front of the radiator proved quite tough as there was just nowhere for it to go!

Really only needed if you have a of power and you use it a lot (track days), or you are towing heavy loads. Some cars don't take well to idling in drive for long periods and can overheat the transmission, but I doubt this is a problem in any Toyota.

i repaired a workmates oil cooler yesterday for his drift car. says he got it from the wreckers and paid 15 bucks for it. its a good little sucker too, i just welded the fittings in that he needed.

so definitely cheaper options out htere. :-)

James . I originally ran a cooler from the wreckers ... it ended up hurting the clutch packs in the box as it wasnt flowing properly ... For the sake of $100-$150 , id do it right as i had to end up swappin in anther gearbox .

Daniel, you may have been unlucky with your cooler being blocked with crap? Its a good idea to give it a good flush out with a solvent before using it.

I have been running a 2nd hand Magna cooler for the last 3 years and I am putting down 270rwkw and my box is still hanging in there.
