I've had this problem for a number of months.
When the car warms up it doesn't want to start. Have to wait around sometimes an hour before it will start. When you turn the ignition it's dead. The starter won't even tick as if the battery is flat. I've replaced the battery but it hasn't made a difference. It's Much worse in hot weather. During winter I'd encounter this problem maybe once a week. In the hotter weather it happens nearly every time.
I've done a search and come across the fuel pump ecu problem but the symptoms sound different. I thought it might be a power transistor but have no idea what to look for it.
Any advice would be great.

do you loose power to everything or just the starter. I have not struck this on a soarer but have struck it of a lot of other cars. A high resistance in the starter circuit when hot or a slightly weak battery causes a low voltage to the starter solenoid activation wire so the starter wont kick in. The usual fix is fitting a relay to feed direct battery voltage to the activation wire when you crank as a relay needs a lot lower voltage to energise than a starter solenoid. If you are unsure about the wiring in any auto electrician should be able to do it for you. However if everything is going out it could be a dead battery cell or a dirty battery terminal

Yeah it seams to kill everything. That's why I replaced the battery with super heavy duty unit, but it's still doing the same thing. My dad is an electrician so I'll get him to do as you said when he drops around today. Thanks for the advice Brett.

Interesting yeah it's a big pain when filling up. In hot weather it's almost certain not to start again.

I had that exact problem and it was the fuel pump ecu. There should be a thread on here about how to check if its faulty by shorting it with a paperclip.

The fuel pump ECU has nothing to do with the starter motor not engaging. As Neil said, Use a relay on the starter circuit. This is a common toyota problem. Had it on my old corolla.

might want to pull out your starter motor and get all the contacts inside replaced. they're not much more then $5 or so each from an auto electriction
