Hi guys, as title states i have a whining noise, and i am a bit worried now as i cant get rid of it.

Story starts about two seeks ago, the engine overheated due to a leak in the welsh plug on the thermostat housing, or a leak occurred due to the overheat i don't know. I removed pretty much everything since it looks like Toyota built the engine around the water pump. I thought while i have everything apart i might as well replace the thermostat, water pump, timing belt, timing belt tension pulley. I used the tutorial in the other post as a guide. After putting everything back together i start the engine, and there is a whining noise which increases with RPM and the pitch increases with RPM, i have the timing belt cover off and it sounds like its coming from there or the cam gears. I have rechecked that TDC and the cams align and have reset the timing belt tensioner, noise is still there. The car is still on stands so it has been on an angle for a week or so, it is due for a service but I don't see how an oil change will affect this. Please help
Cheers

I'm no expert but are the belts or pulleys rubbing against anything? Do any of the pulleys appear to have play in them while the motor is spinning and is the serpentine belt aligned corrently?

Maybe you have it at too much of an angle and the sump pickup isn't sucking up oil? Pop the oil filler cap off and you should see a bit of oil flicking off the cam lobes.

yep, i think its hereditary with all soarers, my powersteering pump has a wurr, especially after you first start the car. As long as its performing im not worried :-)

Remove your serpentine belt and then see if its still there, if it dissapears you have narrowed it down to something to do with the serpentine belt/pulley/pumps :-)

thanks guys.

Found the problem, the timing belt tensioner pulley holder was different to the standard one, it holds the pulley 5mm further, which caused the timing belt to be too tight which is where the whining was coming from, either the belt or the bearings in the pulley. I replaced it with the old one but used the new pulley, noise is gone so I'm happy.
Thanks for all the tips hope this is of use to anyone with similar problems.

cheers

I'm getting this noise now... but i haven't changed a thing.. its just come out of nowhere..

I've put my ear close to it and it sounds like its coming from the timing belt area. Could this happen even if i haven't replaced anything?

How many k's do you have on the clock? Timing belt could be on it's way out or the tensioner bearing is dead. Could also be other things like the water pump, serpentine belt, power stearing pump, fan bearing... All those things could sound like whining and all could sound like they are coming from the same spot, but I would say it's most likely the water pump in your case.

check:
your power steering fluid level.
if the serpentine belt has cracks in it.
condition of the harmonic balancer.

if all that is good, remove the top timing belt cover and see what condition the timing belt is in, cracks/cuts = bad.

still cant see the problem?

remove the serpentine belt and start the car but not for long because your water pump and alternator will not work and you will get a few warnings, but just see if the noise is gone, if it is its the water pump or tensioner pulley.
If the noise is still there then its the timing belt or timing belt tensioner, at 190k kms I would change all of the above as your coming up to the 200k kms service.

Was your 100k kms service done? were all these things changed?

start the car with no accessory belt. this will tell you if its timing belt related. if it goes away could be alternator, p/s maybe even a/c clutch bearing or an idler with noisy bearing.

Well i just had a new belt and tensioner put on but havnt touched the timing belt.. the noise wasnt there when the belt and tensioner were first installed but its all of a sudden happened.

I bought the car at around 170K on the clock so ive just been doing its general servicing at home replacing what needs replacing but it seems as soon as i fix one thing on this car something else goes.. lol

Do you still have the old tensioner?
