Hi there,
today my soarer decided it needs me to sacrifice more money to it, by ejecting the crank pully into my front suspension on stkilda road just before peak hour this arfternoon.
Enough story, how much should I be paying for parts, just asking as I've found dealers like to charge rather alot just wanting to know what is acceptable? Are there any options other than Toyota except the solid eBay rubbish.
So far I think I need: crank pully and bolt fan belt
I'm thinking of getting a gates timing belt and throwing that in while I'm there.

If your going to do timing belt you might as well do the water pump, cam seals and crank seal. Plus replace your timing belt tensioner and pulley. If I was you and depending on the KM traveled between your last timing belt I would just replace the serpentine belt(accessories belt)and the harmonic balancer(crank pulley). I actually had one of my mates ring me during the week with the identical problem - Weird. How many kms has it done since its last timing belt?

Assuming it spat the pulley off the balancer as mine did a few weeks back, you won't need a new bolt - the old one can safely be re-used.
I bought a second hand harmonic balancer for $165NZD off a 1999 GS300 with 90,000 on the clock. Hope it lasts a while at that price! I had no choice as I needed to get home (happened while I was in another city) If thats what they are asking second hand I hate to think what a new one would cost.
Are your fan blades still OK? Mine got mangled so I ended up having to go to a thermo setup, as I could not find a matching fan anywhere.

serpentine belt should be no more than ~$40 that's from toyota, i think mine was $44, harmonic balancer, just get a second hand one from one of the guys in for sale threads. Did the bolt come out or did the rubber simply fall apart? if the bolt is still there re-use it. All this work u can do yourself fairly simple. All you need is a breaker bar and some sockets. I'm in SE suburbs if u need a hand let me know.

all depends on how long a piece of string is.
the balancer is suppose to be replaced at the 100,000 km service . so basically toyota has designed them to be replaced ..
you can buy a new balancer for about $400 or so
or risk using a second hand one that could get you out of the S*&T.
the above link is in USD so add a bit for postage and dollar conversion.
i had one fall off my car at 160,000 kms , s i doubt it was done at the 100km service.
i do have a second hand one if you get stuck $100 including post.
no harm in doing a timing belt while your there if it looks tatty. ( although being a clearance motor even if timing belt fails you wont get valves smashing into pistons )
consider your self luck as i have heard horror stories about balancers going into sumps and pumps and causing some serious damage

you still drove with no balancer matchy ?
when the pulley falls off so does your sep belt , that runs the water pump so even though you dont do any damage to the radiator you will have no power steer (first and easiest sign of failure) and no water pump which of course will quickly lead to over heat

Yeah unfortunately at the time I was very clueless about cars. I drove it all the way home in limp mode, I know it's embarrassing.
From what I recall, power steering was off and it was very loud, presumably from the harmonic balancer having fallen off. It did not overheat til I pretty much got home, which was maybe a 15 minute drive. Crazy hey? I swapped the harmonic balancer and radiator, and the car was back on the road as normal.
Edit: I should mention that it was just a trickle of fluid coming out of the radiator.
