Am currently in the process of getting the rod bearings on my 1JZ changed from OEM to ACL Race bearings, and received a call from Crankshaft Rebuilders telling me that the Rod Bearings are around .5mm thinner than standard Toyota bearings...

They informed me that the oil holes line up fine and that as long as the bearings are located correctly with the oil holes in the rods when re-assembled, that there should be no problem with them...is anyone able to comment on this and confirm?

I know many other guys have replaced their OEM bearings with ACL race bearings, so I am gathering that someone else may have stumbled across this...

your motor hasnt been rebuild before you purchased it? It may have had the crank ground and oversized bearings installed. What is the specs on the back of the bearings shells? If it has "STD" on the back anywhere there standard, if it has say .25 on the back there oversizes.

If it is .5mm thinner, then there is going to be .5mm more clearance which is to large and way out of spec

Hi Scott, I've owned the car for the past 10 years and it had 86,000km on it when bought...so don't think it has had a rebuild...they also informed me that the old rod bearings in there were stamped with STD, so probably confirming that the no work has been done before...

In regards to the width, I probably should have been a little more clearer...I think they are referring to the width of the bearing and not the thickness. They did mention that they look like they are 2JZ rod bearings which may be slightly thinner in width by a couple of thou.

These are the bearings that I purchased:

The rods themselves are being balanced, shot peened, resized, linished and dressed...I may be wrong but I believe they said that the resizing process ensures that the new bearings fit the rod and rod journal properly in regards to the arc and thickness, and that the re-sizing will remove any wear and ensure perfect fit once again.

Seems like someone else with a Honda has had a similar query before:

I priced OEM rod bearings from Toyota here in VIC, and they need to be imported from Japan at $260 + GST for the rod bearings only...what a mark up compared to ACL Rod/Mains and Thrust bearings for $155 US.

O sorry i misread, i thought u meant thickness not width. No worries mate, as long as it fits nicely within the crank journals and lines up i cant see any problem amte

Crankshaft rebuilders know their stuff, if they say its ok it will be ...

The only question i might be asking them is, does the .5mm appear to be off on side of the bearing or does it appear to be .25 off both sides, as in are the bearings still sitting central in the rod cap ..

Just thinking it might be a smaller width bearing due to the fact that ACL allow for the crank if it has to be re-ground that it can be re-ground with a greater radius on the sides of the journal for more strength .. As they are classified as a Race bearing hence going into a Race motor ? ..

Thanks guys for the response...

When I spoke to them this morning they said that the bearing was still central to the rod cap and journal, so I am gathering that it is equal on both sides of the bearing. They only mentioned that when re-assembling ensure that the bearings are central to the oil holes...

I have full faith in Crankshaft Rebuilders, probably just not enough faith in myself ;)

Anyways I gave them the ok to go ahead and perform the work this morning...should hopefully have the block and crank back in under 2 weeks...:-)
