Hi guys,
Been working on the 1JZed again and we've stumbled on a new problem that we'd not noticed before. We just tried to drive it up the driveway, well, but it doesn't move!
You see, the transmission isn't selecting gears. Now the selector itself moves the point at the gearbox. But you have to understand the electrics of this car are a bit butchered as most of it wasn't really applicable anymore.
So what we have: Regular Automatic ECU is connected. No other types of ECU's are. The Park Neutral switch is hooked up, so the car can start when in park or neutral. And that's about it. Obviously there is a ECT transmission ECU, but we've not actually used that at all. It was one of the parts we boxed away and cut the loom.
Now we've noticed we can't shift into any drive gear and have it spin the wheels, is the ECT ECU necessary?
We've another theory. I made an assumption that the brake switch which releases the shifter from park and allows you to go to R or D etc was a purely mechanical switch. That is it only flipped a toggle out of the way to release the shifter. But does this actually have a secondary wire or something to the Transmission to stop it from choosing gears? Obviously if that's the case we'll have to jimmy up something to trick it, or install some kind of switch ourselves.
So that's about as much info as I can think of that's relevant. The engine was swapped over, the transmission was swapped over and the electrics butchered. Should be all fine right?
I'd think if you have no ECT ECU connected in, it should still shift into drive and run, but won't be able to shift to 2nd/3rd etc since the ECT ECU that controls the solenoids to shift isn't there.

Sounds a bit confusing,
Firstly what car has the motor been swapped in to? from the first line sounds like a nissan 240Z or something.
Either way there is no separate transmission ecu as it is integrated on the Main ECU, that is why there are different ecus for the manual and auto transmissions.
What part of the loom did you cut away and why? the loom needs to be complete to run everything as it should.
The shift lock button is just to release the shifter and has no other connections.
Was the engine and trans separated before installing or was it swapped over complete? could be a problem with the converter or even as simple as the shifter linkage not being attached. As Boris said it will still shift into reverse and D but not go through the gears.

Yeah made that assumption already, perhaps hastily.

Everything to do with Electrics not to do with the engine and transmission. So if you think of all those wires from the front fuse box, pretty much everything that didn't connect to the ecu.
So ABS - Gone. TRC - Gone Lights - gone All the electrics inside the car for the dash - gone When you have a look at the actual wiring loom you'll see its about an inch and a half thick. Its huge. Only about 1/15th of that stuff is related to the engine..

They came together in the halfcut but the shop which did the mounts may have separated them at some point. Obviously that was something we couldn't do ourselves and get engineering approval.

Thats what i thought too, just on the shifter itself.
The linkage is definitely working two reasons - 1) i can see it moving the actual shift bit on the transmission.. 2) Because it activates the neutral/park switch which allows you to turn the car on. If that wasn't being activated then we'd be able to not start the car at all, or start it in any position.

Yeah, well we've been thinking about that... but its not in a location to easily get up real high so i don't exactly want to spend too much time dropping the transmission and diagnosing something. to be fair if its not something we can do at home it'll have to get towed up the (steep) driveway and to a tranny shop.

How much oil is in the transmission ?
It's fine, according to the dipstick.

nissan 240Z
yeah its the 260z 2+2 that i've got in another thread here. It's a legitimate nissan - it's an import from japan
IF the ECT circuit is incomplete because it isn't sending a signal to the transmission is that an issue?

dunno just dropped the fluid and cleaned the filter, and filled the fluid back up but used a grease gun to push some through the lines which go through to the radiator. Thinking maybe the torque converter wasn't picking up the new fluid considering it was probably dry for 12+ months...
