A while ago I was having problems with my starter motor not being able to turn my car over. When I hit ignition it would just make a loud clunk and nothing would happen. The battery was fine, so I installed new battery terminals, earthed the negative lead to the engine and got no result. I tried jump starting it and it worked a few times but eventually even this stopped working. So I bought a second hand 2j starter motor and that seemed to fix the problem even though my engine was now full of fuel due to a stuffed fuel pressure regulator.

All was well for around a month, then one day I jump in the car and I get tick tick tick. It was just grinding away on the flex plate so I guess the bendix gear wasn't disengaging properly.

I then went and had my 1j starter motor rebuilt and on the first turn all I got was clunk! I kept trying it and on the fifth or so go it fired up. Turned it off, turned it on and no problems. I was thinking maybe it was just a little sticky and now that it's loosened up a bit it'll be alright which it was until I let there car sit there for around a day. Every time I tried turning it over when it hadn't been started for around 24 hours I would have to turn the key five or so times to get it started. It was as if the starter motor just didn't have the balls to turn the car over but once it started the problem would go away for a day.

Yesterday I got in the car just to see if it would turn over and predictably so it wouldn't. Despite my better judgement I just held the ignition on until I smelt smoke coming from the engine bay. Now when I try to turn it over it just spins away and the bendix gear isn't firing at all. Pretty safe to say it's time to rebuild my 2j starter motor and throw that in but what would be causing the problem in the first place? I don't want to go through the hassle of installing another starter motor only to have the same problem.

Any ideas???

Alternator and ground are ok. The cars reading 14V + when running and I earthed the battery to the block directly and had the same results.

I'm thinking either my relay is stuffed or the trigger wire has had it. I'm going to test out my starter today but I'm pretty sure it's stuffed.

Sounds like the starter is still kaput, or the throw in solenoid is weak.

I'm getting my 2J starter rebuilt so I'll put that in next week. My auto electrician agreed with the relay theory so I'll replace that at the same time and see how it goes.

I threw in the rebuilt 2j starter motor and I think it nearly ripped my flex plate off. Starts like a dream now so I guess the first one wasn't rebuilt properly. Now on to fixing my inlet manifold leak.

This problem is back to haunt me once more. I turned the car over the other day and clunk. After a few tries the starter started grinding big time. I tried jumping it with my mates car and at first nothing changed then after a couple minutes it fired up.

What the hell could this be? I took the car to the auto electrician that rebuilt the starter motor last thursday. He said yesterday that he is checking wether or not the bendix gear has the right amount of teeth??? How could he get that wrong and does anyone think that could be the problem?

I'm still thinking that my trigger/ignition wire is corroded.

Just heard from the auto electrician and it turns out he installed the wrong bendix gear, it's on tooth out. I won't be going back there again.
