Hi All,

Quite sure turbo is on way out, can hear it start to whine.. I found a turbo that might fit straight onto my flange. These are the specs, can you all give me an idea of whether this is a performance type turbo.. i.e.how it would go with the 1jz and whether a twin turbo stock setup would still be better than this single. Cheers

The t04E is a 1970's era turbo, same with th TB31 turine.

So while its small they are very laggy/light switch power delivery any wont make much power for the amount of lag the car will have.

To answer your question the stock twins while laggy as well will be better than that turbo.

The only people still selling these turbos afaik are china ebay vendors, so will probably be cheap and nasty too.

hmm that's good to know. The turbo is for sale for around $800 but has a stamp plate on it from turbotec, so not sure if its a china version?

What i have now is the CT26 on there with quite large shaft play. Would it be better to purchase a $75 rebuilt kit and rebuild my CT26 rather than purchase this T04? I wouldn't think so if its going to be about the same? Anyone know of any direct bolt ons to my custom manifold which has the CT26 on there.. looking at minimal work to rest of car i.e. flanges dump etc.. This T04 is apparently direct drop in for the CT26 which is why i was really interested in it

I would either buy another Ct26 or have yours rebuilt, even though they are quite old the CT26 is quite a good turbo and a whole generation ahead in technology over a t04E.

How large is large shaft play? most journal bearing turbos have a lot of shaft play compared to ball bearing ones.

I've never heard of Turbotec so I would say its a China turbo.

The other option is have your Ct26 turbinehousing modded to fit a GT3071 CHRA

Thanks for that, not worth spending money on old tech.

Cant exactly remember but its definitely out of the manufacturers tolerances of like 0.15mm.. Id say radial play would be at least 2.5mm from one end to other end. Shaft play im not sure this could be present as well.

How much am i looking at a rebuild done by a shop? I have seen lots of threads on rebuilding the CT26 yourself by taking a few components to the shop for machining and balancing...

I can possibly also get my hands on a CT26 out of a celica with minimal shaft play but blowing smoke.. still needs seals but i think the dump flange is different on the celica's compared to the 7MGTE flange which is what mine is i think.

Also I'm almost 100% sure that the vibration/whining type feeling is from this shaft play.. do i have any major risks using the car as is for the time being, driving it grandpa spec?

Any suggestions?
