Hey guys to my surprise on my way home from work the crank broke off.
Well where the fan belt goes on.
I just had a new belt, water pump and seals put in and two weeks later this goes.
Back to the mechanic.

Hope this is the last thing that can happen for a while. That must of been why my check engine light came on yesterday.

The harmonic balancer? (big pulley on the crankshaft)

Man this seems to be happening to a lot of people recently, it would probably be a good idea to get a new balancer if anybody has an upcoming 100'000km service. I heard they are around $400 from Toyota though.. ouch!

Dont know if it works out cheaper with postage, but it's an option if Toyota is too expensive.

Just shot off an email to Justin from Ayamaya or whatever it's called in Japan.
I'll see how much he can do it for.

Yes, the rubber perishes and the pulley section separates from the centre. Happened to me December last year when I was 150KM from home. I got a second hand unit of a late model GS300, but I think they are worth adding to the 100,000km service items list. Mine failed at around 170,000km/13 years and destroyed my radiator fan at the same time.

It really sounds like you should be selling the Soarer and buying something newer - these sorts of things ALWAYS happen on old cars - there is no way around it, and its pointless to complain about it - its a fact of life. If you don't like working on cars then don't own an old car. If you can't afford a newer car, then drive an older car that is cheaper to fix than a Soarer, which is not only an old car, but an old, high performance, luxury car.

The Soarer is actually very reliable for a car that is between 11 and 19 years old. Sell it and get a 2 year old Yaris and you'll be fine for the next four or five years. And bored to death.

Spot on Matthew, That what I keep telling people.
One of my shift solenoids is playing up and I told my mate and he says, "man your car is always playing up what a piece of crap"..

Then I told him its almost 20 years old.
and that its the original gearbox pushing around 320hp. so its bound to happen.

on the other hand my car has never broken down in the 4 years iv driven it.

Yeah it is the harmonic balancer.
Got quoted $400 for a new one.
Thanks mate for your info, but it was expected on an old car I was just letting some frustration out.

I will fix it along with all the other probs that come along, you wont see this quality on other models/brands of this year.

The plan is to get it going back to original performance then all the mods will come at a later stage.
I have a company car anyway this is my joy ride.

If any one knows where we can get these at a better price please let me know.

Thanks Jeff and Austen for the your advise.

Cheers

Chris that price is very good but they have none in stock at the moment.

Austen $284 posted is also quite good compared to $404, may have to look at getting this I think.
Thanks guys for all your help
