Much easier with a proper oil filter wrench -- like a big shallow socket which fits over the end of the filter.

I use one of these, one handed. Just tighten it, then turn the filter, then loosen and readjust on the filter, then tighten and turn. Do that as many times as needed...usually only a couple of times. Then just spin it of with your hand. Pretty cheap too!!

Where the heck do I get one?

Can you get a hand around the filter? If you can use sandpaper to get a good grip. otherwise get a cap style wrench and go hard. If you're still stuck the offer still stands i'll come give you a hand.

I've used sandpaper like Scott said. I usually use a pretty corse one and that gets the job done. As for putting a new one on, i put oil on the rubber seal, and in the threaded hole. It's a lot easier to get off that way. And try to loosen it before your hands get all oily too.

I use this sort of oil filter wrench. The harder you turn it, the harder it bites in and grips. Just attach your ratchet to it and away you go.

That it does. I spoke to a local Aristo owner @ Rogers Video yesterday and he's going through the same issues.

I got the oil filter wrench above from Supercheap if I remember correctly. Clever design!

I had issues getting mine off the first time, took me over 4 hours of trying and fighting, but the hardest bit for me was the damn engine was at full running temperature when I started, so the harder I gripped, the more the bastard would burn me.

Anyway, after cooling it down for the time, using rags, sand paper, and anything else I had that was grippy I eventually turned to the old trusty screwdriver!!!

Get the biggest screwdriver you can fit in the general area, and get a rubber mallet and belt the friggin screwdriver through the filter.

once the driver is through the filter, a breaker-bar on the other end of it managed to turn it 2mm's.

Remove screwdriver, move it around 2mm, and drive the bastard back through the filter (yes, oil goes everywhere and it's damn messy).

Get breaker bar and turn filter again, this time 3mm and the seal is broken.

Remove screwdriver and gently grip filter watching for the nasty sharp metal at the bottom, and the prick turns and comes out nice and easy.

I have had to do this for EVERY car I have owned on the first oil change. I started thinking it was me under-tightening the filters, but I was told they should be loose enough to get off by hand with eventual fighting, but generally, if left longer than regular servicing intervals, they tend to start getting harder to remove.

I love that wrench idea though, much cleaner than my idea, but it doesn't vent the frustration and annoyance of belting a 35cm long scredriver through the damn thing!!!

How's this for a thread revival?

So on Wednesday, after 2 weeks of owning my TT, I decided to change the oil on my RDO. Boy was this one of the worst days of my life?

So I grabbed my usual handle type oil filter removal tool (handle with the tightening loop on the end). There was no way this was going to fit. So I put on rubber gloves and tried but the spot was so tight and the filter was stuck on even tighter!

My last resort (so I thought), was to puncture it with a screwdriver. This just went straight through and through the other side. It didn't turn, only ripped the filter more.

Upload

Damn! This didn't work. So I jumped onto this page and found this thread. So over to Supercheap Auto I went and bought what I though was going to work. Looked great! Nice fit, but when I went to use it, it would tighten, then click and go all loose again. What the heck?

This was now about 5 hours in.

A friend then came over thinking his ratchet strap was going to work wonders. It didn't. He couldn't get it into the tight spot.

We kept trying with the screwdriver and the hammer, and the extension bar. Eventually we stopped for a breather and a think. What it we tapped it at the base to crack the seal? Flat head between the block and the filter. A few taps and don't know if it worked or not.
So we tried to tap the lip/base of the filter in a downward motion to try and push it to turn it off... Half an hour later of this and it finally came out!

I was the happiest man in the world! I gave my mate a hug! He didn't even want to celebrate with a beer!

I don't ever remember my Limited V8 being anything like the TT for an oil filter removal. That one was straight forward!

Try a set of Oil filter Pliers.

Basically a big set of grips that grip the oil filter then you have lots of leverage to turn.

Don't think they would fit in the tight spot of the TT filter.
