Hi All,

does anyone know of someone on the Gold Coast or Brisbane who will do a reasonably priced manual conversion on a 91TT?

I have bought 2 gearbox auto gearbox off members so far, one being worked but when i lost reverse and took it to a specialist i was told it had a hard life and not worth repairing. Less than 2 weeks in the car and about 3 hours of driving (wearing in not flogging) and the other being stock, put it in over the weekend and seals have had it and it slips through the gears 1/2 hour of driving...rather disapointing you would agree after spending over $2g so far on Gearboxes that were supposed to be ok.

Also i have now killed my original Auto.

I dont want to buy another auto from a member as i cant seem to find a genuine sale.

Anyone know of any good places or people who can supply decent parts and do the conversion?

Or anyone on the coast that can do decent Auto rebuilds and strengthen without costing an arm and a leg.

Not sure power i have but is single T04B running 22 PSI with 850cc injections, worked fuel system, front mount, nw Engine management etc. expect 250-300rwkw. (got 247rwkw on tune it)

Thanks

thats why the gearboxes are dying, its not that the sellers are trying to rip you off, that sort of power will kill any auto box unless its a MV autos full house box which will set you back 4K or so.

You simply have to much power for the standard auto

Hi Scott, i understand that, however the first box i received was supposed to be fully worked to handle the power. the 2nd was simply to be used so i could transport the car to get the conversion or to a specialist but i didnt really get out of the street before i smelt the burning of Gearbox oil.

Anywho that is the nature of the beast with 2nd hand parts and im not having a go at the sellers it is just dissapointing.

Do you have any ideas surrounding someone on the coast for the conversion or a box specialist?

Thanks

Hi All, have a few options on the table re both manual and Auto.
Had a interesting discussion with Precise Autos (well know for V8 drag applications)
Something along the lines of dropping a fully worked and manualised C4 into the mix. (for a very reasonable price may i add)
How many people have done this?
I like it for the fact there will be no reliance on electrics or management.
I have had these boxes before (351C in a 83 XJ6 Jaguar and 351W in a 450se Mercedes both worked and both manual C4) so i know there clunky etc.

Any thoughs anyone?

You lose overdrive so your fuel consumption will increase on longer journeys . You will also find you wont enjoy driving the car long distances with only 3 gears .

Also trying to work out a convertor to suit would be a trial and error thing too .

May i ask what your power output currently is ?

I know Gas Motorsports use turbo 400 boxes behind their decent hp Supras .

Hey Daniel, the stallie is the only thing that might make an issue, i dont hit boost till 4200 rpm as is and used to run a 3000prm converter which was ok. I use my Harley for long journeys so its more of a weekend thing. maybe a trip to brisbane (1 1/2 hours) every now and then and thats about the extent of it for lengthy drives.
Precise may have an idea re converter as it seems like he had done these before.
Power output i would only be guessing, ran 247rwkw on tune in with a completley cracked (whole way around one pipe) turbo manifold and also a slipping gearbox and stallie. 850cc injectors were almost maxed out and also intake manifold was causing resistance. T04B 1.6AR at 22psi. Tuner estimated over or touching 300 rwkw on final tune.. never had a box in long enough to get it retuned.
Your guess is as good as mine re power.
Cheers

HI everyone i stumbled upon a 2 speed power glide, just another option around the same thought as the C4 Auto.
I know these are used in Drag Racing alot due to only one shift.
It is an alloy Powerglide not cast iron meaning it should hold the power (once built) without any issues at all. With a 3500rpm stallie it should not be too laggy (i would have to change the diff and strengthen prop shaft to handle the abuse, however this was always going to be an issue no matter which way i go.)
The only thing is it is off a 183 (holden) with the 1.82 gearset, not the american V8 version of 1.76. Would this make a difference regarding ability to hold the power?
Thanks Guys
