I was quite surprised that searching for 'oil leak' (subject line only) yields 0 results!, ...not any more. :-)

Is having 0 oil leaks from my 1JZ too much to ask? ...you wouldn't think so. I dream of crawling under my car with a bright light to be greeted with a oil free sump and bell housing!; Sadly that's not the case.

For the record i'm running Castrol R (Synthetic 10w-60)

The first major service of my 1JZ (6 months ago) included 2 cam seals, a crank seal and a rear main seal.
I replaced these seals because of a apparent problem i had with oil coating pretty much the entire sump, starting from the harmonic balancer, and spreading down to my gearbox (R154).
My starter motor was covered with motor oil too.

The motor wasn't using much oil, leaving the odd drip mark after every drive. 3 months of driving and the dip stick is only now falling below full.

Now 6 months later all the same oil leaks are there, so i'm scheduling the car to come off the road again so i can fix them once and for all. I'm hoping some of you can help me fix these leaks!

One thing I noticed with the rear main, which was a 2JZ item, was that it was a poor fit as it didn't sit well. I wasn't about to question the toyota parts dealership staff so we had to secure it with some adhesives. I know how dodgy that sounds!.

About the only oil leak i did manage to fix was from the cam covers, which was quite easy just nipping up the bolts.

Anyway to cut a long story long ;) ...are there any known common leaks with the 1JZ?, or any specific viscosity oils not to use?, any special seals or tips and tricks? ...I would appreciate it!

Thanks.

-Todd.

Nipping up the Cam Cover Bolts does not stop the problem..Because the rubber is HARD..Does'nt squish down..

Generally all the toyotas I have had have a small leak from the cam cover. Not the current 1jz but the old one had a bit of a leak there.

Haven't had any of the other ones you mentioned though.

Over tightening the cam covers tends to make it worse, as Neil mentions, hence the phillips heads. Glueing down with a high temp silicon helps.

Actually Todd, I have noticed the same problem with my new IJZ. My old one only leaked from the cam covers. My new one (I replaced the Main seal) and now I have noticed a very small oil amount between the bellhousing and engine. Also the starter motor has oil all over it. My new cam seals are beautiful (new and used the old glue trick to keep em down).

The only good thing is, at least the engine looks sweet and clean from the top :-)

Is there a special silastic out there anyone swears by?

Another thing i've forgot to mention is i've disconnected the drivers side cam cover oil breather and attached a small K&N filter. Passengers PCV valve is still in use and seems to work fine after an inspection.

After a chat with a friend one possibility is excess crank case pressure resulting from the disconnected oil breather. My defence was that the oil breather isn't blocked off, just working in passive mode instead of vacuum. Also if it was excess CCP you would think it would be pushing oil out, instead of what appears to be a minor oil leak from bad seals.

I do plan on installing a catch can and re-routing it back into the intake.

It would be good to hear and or SEE some peoples reworking of the engines oil breathing system, I know there are a lot of various designs out there.

Use NO Silcons or Glue (Some Silcans WILL destroy Oxygen Sensors)

Just use new Gaskets..With some Three Bond on the edges of the Cam Shell's..Frt & Rear..(Just a little

Another question...

Will i have to buy the same seals again if i am to attempt to fix the oil leaks again. Despite the seals that are all ready in there only being 6 months old?

They were quite expensive so if i can re use them that would be great.
