So my harmonic balancer just decided to part ways @ 6500rpm ..... WOW !

Does anyone have any info Going to be a fun job .

Lucky it didnt damage anything . Heard a BANG and 2 thuds on the floorpan and that was it . Then noticed slight squealing noise assoicated with Warning message on dash . Straight away i knew what it was ...

SO yeah guys/girls . How much are these things going for nowadays ?

Cheers .

About $100 or so for a good one, or you can pay around $650-$800 for an aftermarket one.

Consdier buying the toyota tool to remove/refit the balancer to do it right.

I got one off a late model GS300 for $165 I think it was. Slightly different design on the later model motor but fit perfectly. You are lucky, when mine went it destroyed my radiator fan.

SPoke to Toyota Parts and thye didnt have a clue about any tool used to remove harmonic balancer ...

Guess i will just have to go to Supercheap or Repco and see if they can help me .

He was useless . " Sorry mate call back monday " .

I Said " Mate you work in parts it should be your job to find what i am after , go wash cars or something " !

Anyways guess i will get the run around at repco as well now !

A harmonic balancer remover is about 20 bucks from Supercheap Auto. I'm guessing about the same from Repco etc.
They work great for removing stubborn steering wheels as well.

I'm not talking about the puller.

I'm talking the tool used to hold the balancer while you untighten and tighten it.

Here's a link to the sst catologue, it's got everything awesome on there.

Yep, you need the Toyota SST to do the job correctly and it will not FYL when remove/refitting :-)

As for a puller, any balancer puller will work with the clover style design and the correct bolt/washers. $30 SCA one should be ok for this.

SST is around $125-$150 or so for both parts.

WIll have to see how i go without it . Did all my crank , Cam seals, water pump, rad hoses , serp belt and timing belt 15,000km ago .

Car still starts and runs so should be able to use the old breaker bar starter motor trick .

the breaker bar works fine, its just tightening where you have no choice but use a tool of some description. You can actually make a similar tool pretty easily, if you have a welder ?

I just bolt a piece of steel onto the balancer - probably not too good for the balancer (maybe thats why my first one failed at 160,000)

Daniel I bought an OEM balancer for about $250 brand new. It's a 1JZ/2JZ item.

I can't find it on their website but try giving them a call.

Ayamaya quoted me about $260 inc. postage.

Hi Guys,

How common is it for the harmonic ballancers to let go on the 1jz?, can you notice it gradually with symptoms and what are they? or does it happen all of a sudden.

Inspect with a torch and see if the rubber is deteriorating. I'd say nearly all are due for rePlacement sooner or later.

no worries daniel glad you got it sorted :-)
probably only symptoms are possibly wobble/vibration i engine or a squeaky belt as it is misaligned as the rubber has perished or broken and the outer metal pulley has moved.

Well my rubber feels very hard like it's plastic, not rubbery at all but can't really see cracks in it, only had a quick look after i took it off, maybe will have a look at the back tomorrow.

It is very dense rubber. Chances are if you can't see cracks it'll be OK at least for now. Mine let go without any real warning, but I'm told they usually squeal and carry on for a bit before letting go. 60,000km earlier I had inspected it before putting it back on and to me it had looked OK at that stage - unfortunately I should have replaced it anyway.
