As above just wanting to know if anyone is using an external Bosch 910 fuel pump ? And if so what was involved in installation etc.

I can pick a genuine pump up for a decent price from a private seller. Just curious on some info/feedback.

Cheers,
Mike

WHy would you bother when you can install a walbro in tank ?

External pumps are quite noisy and a PITA !

UNless you need more than 1 fuel pump , then you can run twin walbro's on the factory hanger :-)

Hi Michael, just FYI judging by the the specs of that fuel pump its designed for high pressure applications. Accordingly its flow rate is actually quite low.

I would be looking into a Walbro in-tank for a quick and easy upgrade or Bosch 0 series pump if you're doing a complete fuel system overhaul with aftermarket ECU. The Bosch 023/044/040 pumps are the high flowing units OK for normal 40psi + 1:1 rising fuel systems and will deliver 400rwkw+ worth of fuel.

For quieter designs, look into big OEM replacement pumps from DENSO (ie. USDM MKIV Supra pump).

Any fuel pump drawing greater than about 7 amps will need a relay and straight power from the battery, switched on by the OEM fuel pump ECU output signal if you're using a piggyback, or straight from your aftermarket ECU. Most big pumps draw greater than 10 amp and will need upgraded electrical wiring.

yes the walbro intank isn't exactly quiet.

I'm well in favour on ditching the old fuel pump ecu, use a new tacho triggered relay, more reliable, cheaper, and not 20 years old.
Ive used Peel instruments before, good stuff.

Thats great Michael - combined with a piggyback or standalone and 20psi, the car will be unstoppable ;)

The 910 is a replacement for many 1980's MFI mercedes engines. Externally mounted under the rear dtivers side, Mercedes actuall had one for the 280/300Sel motors and a twin pump external setup for the V8 420/560 SEL motors! Dead silent too, they fed a fuel 'distributor head' as part of the first electronic fuel injection system from bosch, called K - jetronic, that Benz employed (along with Porche, Ferrari to name a few) ftom the early 70's and in Benz case, right into the 90's!!!!

Known as MFI (Mechanical Fuel Injection) I feel that with its god awful brass static injectors, its ridiculous distributor head, and out of this world air flow meter plunger thingy, its best remembered as Muthaf*cker Injection System, and may it rest in peace. Or burn in mechanical hell, either/either.....

Aaron, the K Jetronic, was a total pain, to work on agreed. Several people have successfully converted the old Mercs to EFI, which improves things dramatically.
But I think the fuel delivery side was a damn good design, and as you point out very quiet, for the amount of fuel delivered. You just ditch the fuel accumulator, which isn't needed for traditional EFI and off you go.
I think the walbro pump's are (ok), can't beat the quality of an external Bosch item though, chalk and cheese. And these rather small Walbros have to spin there little rings of, which makes a rather annoying whine, much rather the sound of an ext Bosch pump. And they can be very quiet anyway, all depends on the setup, you can't shut up a Walbro once its in the tank.
