Hey guys, i've been starting to get blue smoke on start up which lasts about 5-10 seconds then goes away. I haven't seen any when driving or on the dyno only after starting the car (usually when cold).

What could this be?

135000 kms. Are the valve stem seal vital or will it be fine in the long run?

it will just keep burning oil. meaning you'll have to check it fairly often to make sure your not running low.

so as long as you keep it topped up and you remember to check it'd be fine. they have a few "on the car" style valve spring compressors so at least you dont have to take the head off to do it.

might even be just as easy to get a quote for a mechanic to do it?

If it is only happening on start up don't worry about it. Just keep changing your oil every 5000k.
Make sure you are using the correct oil.

Would it also be valve stems/valve stem seals if it also blows the same smoke when you accelerate after idling for a while? I.E taking off from traffic lights? Mine does this and on start up, seems to be a common 1JZ problem? Mine is a VVTi, this shouldn't make a difference here though...?

Cheers

Chris.

Sorry I'll rephrase that.

Could it be valve stems/valve stem seals......

A key indicator for valve stem seal failure is a decent vaccum test,

Run it down a long hill with no throttle and then at the bottom give it a bit of stick and see if it blows any smoke - Have a chase car behind you if you want to be sure

If it blows smoke doing this it's pretty much 100% valve stem seals...

Chris, could be valve stem or valve seat related, but could also be more serious. If the smoke is blue it's being burnt in the engine so will either be valve seal or ring seal related - if the smoke is white then its probably turbo seal.

Also make sure your PCV is in good condition - a faulty PCV can cause oil burning, as well has cam cover related oil leaks.

James, yep it definitely does that.

Matthew, the smoke is blue not white so I'm hoping it's not the turbo! I've had the PCV checked and it's functioning perfectly. I think my rocker cover gasket is leaking too, this may be part of the problem?

If the oil is being burnt in the motor, will that foul the spark plugs eventually?

Thanks for the help guys!

Your stem seals are shot then, when you pull it all apart you will soon find out if your turbos are the same too....Good luck with it - Better empty out those pockets lol

Won't help the spark plugs, thats for sure. It would have to be pretty heavy leakage for it to foul them, but it will leave nasty deposits on them that will affect them over time.

Thanks guys, great help!

The fix can wait for now, I'm going over to the States for 2 months at the end of the year so I'm saving!

I'll check the turbo when we have a look at the valve stem seals and *fingers crossed* it's ok. If not, looks like I might have to invest in a GT30R!
