Today I pulled the TB off, gave it a good clean and tried adjusting the TPS.
I couldn't get it to within spec, so I pulled the TPS off my supra and managed to get it right with that.
Went for a drive to find my high-idle with aircon problem is now fixed, but when I checked the timing, it is now around 30degrees!!!

So after thinking it over a little, I'm guessing it's TPS related as now I have much higher base timing than before. With a bit of luck I'll have this solved before the year's out.

Didn't I say that a couple of weeks ago? lol
Good to hear your getting closer to finding the problem.

Spoke too soon. Checked the timing once I got home from work and it's back to the 20degrees. Starting to think this will take a loooooong time to figure out.

It get weirder. Installed a new o2 sensor today, went for a drive, came back and timing is now at roughly 17 degrees. My error code 25 is gone but replaced by code 21.

I think I'm nearly there.
Tried swapping over water temp sensor (near the head) and timing was unchanged.

BUT let the car cool and timing dropped to 15degrees. Unplugged water temp sensor and it jumped back to 20+degrees. Inserted a 1.2k resistor and getting around 14degrees now.

Can someone tell me what the timing should be at out of diagnostic mode??

When I put it into diag mode and check timing, then remove the bridge to bring it out of diag (while watching the timing), there is no difference. It's as if my car doesn't go into diagnostic mode properly. I know it goes into diag mode as the light flashes on the dash though.

I have tried running an earth from the battery directly to E1 on the diag port and this has had no effect.

I can't believe this is so hard to solve!!

so those error codes, 21 and 25, relate to the oxygen sensor. Have you had this looked at? sometimes the wires can deteriorate and touch, causing weird and seemingly unrelated problems(eg my car would change up gears at 4000rpm,at wide open throttle, instead of holding a gear till high in the rev range- my auto electrician found a wiring fault in the 02 sensor- problem fixed)

I've managed to resolve that with a new o2. No more engine fault codes. Only code I have now is code 61 with the auto.

Managed to get hold of another timing gun today. Checked the timing and it reads exactly the same as the one I've been using. So I can rule that out as being a problem.

Is there a troubleshooting procedure anywhere for when the timing is out by a stupid amount?? I've really run out of ideas. I'm thinking the only way to fix it is drop in another engine and hope for the best

Replaced capacitors in one of my ECUs and made no difference. Ordered a new water temp sensor, unlikely to make a difference as I've already tried swapping over from my other car but worth a shot.

Keep getting a ping around 4k, so looks like it's everywhere. Added a heap more fuel and running on 98 at the moment and feels like it's not bad. Never had this kind of problem with my other soarer while it was TT.

A/F ratios are good. Keeping it at 11:1 or richer under boost until I can get this sorted. Using AEM wideband to monitor mixtures and Jaycar digital fuel adjuster to add fuel under load.

Can someone else test their soarer and see what they get at idle with E1 and TE1 bridged?

I still think its a TPS problem.
The other thing I would check is the map sensor, check the hoses and try another sensor if you have access to one.

I've tried 4 different MAP sensors and no difference.
I will pull the TPS off again and re-calibrate it. Something keeps pointing me to it as well even though I've changed it.

You shouldn't need to take the TPS off, just loosen the screws on the side where it mounts to the throttle body and turn it slightly.

Do a leak down test and see what comes up.

If an intake valve isn't sealing it'll ping regardless of ignition timing.

Happens with 1J's.

Thanks Cihan, I wasn't aware of that. I ordered a compression tester last week as I'm in the habit of trying anything no matter how obscure, with a bit of luck it will arrive today.

Work's a bit insane at the moment so not get much time to look at the car.
New water temp sensor arrived today so put it in but made no difference to timing.
Had a quick play with the tps and managed to drop it down to 16degrees!! If I open the jaws on the timing gun a little, it drops to 10degrees. My mate's timing gun does the same thing.

Looks like you were right Rob! If the tps ends up solving this, I'll buy a new one.

Hopefully the roads will dry up tomorrow so I can take it for a spin to see if it's finally sorted.
Compression tester arrived today, hopefully on Sunday I'll get some time to test check it out.

I had/ have a slight pinging issue too, just realised that my boost gauge is teed off my MAP sensor line, could this have something to do with it?
