Hi guys, I've been having a minor issue with my TT. After changing the oil and oil filter and taking the slack out of the throttle cable, the car ran fine for a while. I drove it for about half hour and then switched it off and started it again after 20 min. the idle was about 500, and would slowly drop to 400 then back to 500, then down to 400 to 300 then 500 etc. I had to give it a bit of accelerator to stop it from dying. 3-4 times of that and it went good again, and stayed good for a few days, but has done the same thing today. It usually idles at 600-700. I'm not entirely sure whats gone wrong or if its something I did, but any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried an ECU reset? If you haven't, first try that, then if that doesn't work, unplug your IACV (idle air control valve) then plug it back in and start your car.

I had a similar issue this weekend. I tried swapping ECUs and a few other bits. Nothing worked. In the end I decided to unplug my IACV and plug it back in and that fixed the problem.

Hey Nick, I got your PM about this, but saw you had posted this up before I could reply.
I'm no guru, but my first suggestion would be to reset the ECU - pull the ECU fuse or disconnect the battery for 30 seconds or more. If everything works as it should, the idle might hunt around for a bit, but then find itself a level. Then take it for a drive and the ECU can learn your driving style and adjust itself.
If that doesn't fix the problem, change the fuel filter. It could just be old and full of gunk. If that isn't it, it could be the fuel pump or fuel pump ECU. But hopefully not. :-)

I'll give the IACV thing a go, see if that works. I was just worried I'd made a major mistake during the service lol

Read in one of the posts that a bad electrical connection can cause the ecu to be "reset" causing the initial rough idle. Clean your posts and check earthing connections.

Go for a vacuum leak test.

If the above fail, go clean the tps, idle control valve thingeys. There is also a bypass method to check if your fuel ecu is the culprit.

When nothing else listed above works, its time to spend money on a capacitor change for your ecu. I bought a set of 5 for $2 from Jaycar. Professional installation would cost around $60-$100? If you DIY its free minus your beer and swear jar expenses.

A last gap solution would be to pray to the god of your religion. Good luck!

I would say you have adjusted something that has changed the base idle setting, I think there's a page somewhere that explains how to redo it. No need to go off checking all the other things mentioned above, do the most obvious first.

as jeff said, change it back to the way it was before the issue started and see if it still happens.

I'm having similar issues as well, my car idled right down to 0 RPM last night and stalled on me & I drive an auto :-( Wondering if the spark plugs or coilpack connectors have anything to do with it!

James, if you car runs fine, just has idle issues then it's extremely unlikely to have anything with coilpacks or spark plugs. Have you tried what I suggested??

I agree with what Ross said.

Having a cyclinder out will cause erratic idle, you'll see it won't stay steady.

Acceleration will feel like too. And it's quite audible.

Yeah it didn't seem to last too long, I just stopped the car for a bit, touched one of the leads on the coil pack and I didn't seem to have anymore issues after that! Maybe it was just pure chance, I'll try an ecu reset but I am using an after market Blitz Access ECU! So far the car has been running really well just that one occasion :-(

Okay I had the same issue again last night, had to keep the heater on full blast to keep the car up at 700rpm or it would just hover at 300rpm or less. Is unplugging the IACV similar to changing it over with the V8? -

where is the idle air control valve located on the 1jz and what will I need to remove it? I'm going to try cleaning it tomorrow if I can figure out where it's located and what I'll need to remove it!

Okay I found it, was right in front of me. I disconnected it, started the car and the rpm was still crappy, stopped the car and plugged it on & started it up again, rpm went okay but then average again! I had to drive to healesville so gave it a bit of a flogging here and there & now the car is back to perfect idle for the time being, let's hope it lasts.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I seem to have this same problem, intermittently the idle will be very low, normally after starting it'll idle really low around 400rpm and feels like stalling, it's really bugging me, most days it drives fine but I'd say maybe twice a week it has a little attack and idles low, my car is idling really low at the moment so I'm going to go home and try unplugging then reconnecting the IACV see if it changes anything, I'll post my results back here but if anyone has anything else that I should try/check to solve this problem, it would be greatly appreciated

I had occasional Low idle (500rpm), sounded like lumpy cams, gave the ISCV a clean with some throttle body cleaner, perfect idle now.
