Hi guys,

Just done valve stem seals on my 1jz (with head on). Did one valve at a time, one cylinder at a time and it was a breeze.

Anyhow. 5 of 24 buckets/followers went back on very tight. The rest all turn easy if you pinch and twist, as they did before. The buckets and the bores are clean with no scores, scratches or grit and im lubing the sht out of them. Everything went back EXACTLY the same way it was removed.

Just wondering if anyone here has had this before. Im worried that if i bolt on the cams and turn the engine, the buckets will get stuck further in the bores. On the other hand it may free them up.

Cheers :-)

Did you label all the buckets and put them back in the same bores?

Thanks Matt,

Yeah I did one valve at a time, replacing seal/spring/retainer/keepers/bucket each time before moving to the next valve.

I used penetrative spray on the tight buckets and twisted them repeatedly using long nose pliers (gently) and it seemed to free most of them up a great deal. Enough so that i could depress each valve with both thumbs and have it spring back up.

Even with as much care as i had taken, i can only draw the conclusion that there was crap (seemingly a small undetected amount) fouling the bore.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Matt.

Cheers :-)

Hmm, odd - yeah must have been some micro particles in there, or some micro wear on the buckets or bores - it'll probably be fine once the oil gets into them.
