beautiful, thanks. One thing that came to mind, when i was changing the oil filter, i found a computer harddrive magnet (quite strong) attached to the oil filter, is that something i should be worried about?

No ,snap it back on the new one when you change it

Gahh! Had some mechanics listen to it and fear the big ends gone, need to not drive it while I'm at work at all tommorow so they can listen to it on a proper cold start.

R u for real ?did u even try thicker oil ? Please don't tell me you asked all these questions and wasted everyone's time to not even try thicker oil.

He changed the oil to 20-50 and a Lucas oil stabiliser from what I read . Unlucky if it is big end .

my bad, i missed that post. very unlucky to have done a big end. i have heard of drift cars spinning a bearing due to the oil moving around in the sump heaps but never heard of a 1jz doning a big end.

I have , then it broke a rod and damaged almost everything . Was high km though but probably comes down to lack of maintenance in most cases .

Apparently probably not a big end. they listened to it again today, haven't really got a diagnosis for it, but it definatly has quietened/ almost completely disappeared since putting the 20W-60 oil with the oil stabiliser.. I was thinking tho, if it was a big end, wouldn't it always knock regardless of when it was started or if it was at operating temp?

haha! i have a hard drive magnet on mine as well i put it there tho, big end knock is very noticable through the rev range. you sure it's not your drive belt tensioner bearing going out? mine is extremely 'knocky' at idle, but goes away once revved. got a new pulley but the bolt on mine has been stripped. so i aint changing it till i get another tensioner assembly.

Hmm, that could be it, although, i just changed the drivebelt 2 days ago. It sounds more of a very light knock than a bearing sound, but the knock, only happens 2-3 times, and lasts 1-2 seconds, its very quick. Could it just be that the oil pump is dying and it isn't pumping the oil to the top of the engine quick enough? I'm probably misunderstanding how the oil pump works :/

Same thing happened to mine, threads in the tensioner arm stripped out. I just replaced the front facing bolt with a bolt through the back instead and a nut on the end with some suitable high tensile washers - the tensioner was otherwise in good condition and would have been something like $600 for a new one. Had to grind down the head of the bolt a bit to make sure it cleared the front engine cover, but it's been all good for a couple of years now. |

Not oil pump , they don't die like that . They normally just fail then everything fails , lol

Just a thought ?the knock sensors would retard the timing after the first knocks, could it be that the engine is starting fully advanced? due to degraded ECU perhaps?

Err, no idea haha, i still am yet to reset the ecu properly with the 5-6 hard starts and the aircon and something elses ecu

I'd suggest that it's just the initial startup before the oil pump has time to build pressure.

That is the most likely case, just keep an ear on it and if it starts getting louder or if it starts happening more then get worried.

Yeah that's fair enough, it doesn't bother me anymore, sound the same everytime, stops after 3-4 quiet knocks and thats it. Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated.

Enzo, my JZZ30 does the same; 3 or 4 knocks on startup each morning. Has been doing it for the past 3 or so years. Car still runs like a dream and hasn't given me any trouble. I change the oil every 4k (nearly every month) and haven't been too worried about the knock as it doesn't get any worse. Car is approaching 300k so I guess it's due to high milage. It is to do with oil pressure build up as a low oil warning message displays on startup despite having correct oil level.

Mine has only ever diplayed that low oil level warning twice, once after checking the dipstick and once after i changed the oil and filter.. My car's only got 144 thousand k's on it so not sure hey. It's still the same, not louder or anything so yeah..
