Ok before i start i just wanna say that without taking in all the information ive learnt from the people on this site i wouldn't have achived the things i have with a soarer so easily, so thankyou all for that! .
I researched for over two years while i saved into what would give me the best bang for buck. The soarer came up on top of my list. The first car i looked at was a 91 tt pearl white 120k unmodified and nice offset 17" 275/235 rims. 7.5k cash and it was mine.
Within 3 months of owning the car it was running 12.50's @ 111mph and 1.7 60ft with 255 nexens.
It got a cooler, piping all three inch made at home, a cold air intake with heat shroud, both bought from clark rubber. Shift kit from cam, manual fcd and boost controller. Then dump ehxuast for 325rwhp @ 15 psi. And ive enjoyed this setup for 2-3 years until now, the sad time of no more twins has come, with 245k and the turbo's finally had enough. So now im forced to get out of this as cheaply but professionally as i can.. oh and i dont want to work on stock twins ever again.haha.

To start with i needed to find a cheap turbo, i found locally a genuine kkr 430 for $100 with a bent wastegate rod. The turbo housing needed to be spun into the right position and also checked. Next i need a manifold..not cheap if you want one that will last longer than a few weeks. So me and a mate are making our own. The first thing i did was port the standard manifolds. Using a tungsten bit i smoothed all the cast marks but the most attention was on the main outlet, going from 35mm to 44mm all of it flow ported and still retaining the gasket ring, what a difference!! should flow much better now. During that time i got a bunch of flanges waterjet cut from 12mm mild and 6mm for turbo oil flanges, was $100! a 38mm external wastegate is in the mail Next buy is the assortment of buttweld bends for the manifold and a full stainless ehxuast with stainless mufflers and flexi bend for less than $250, oil lines will be done by pirtek and myself.

Now i need peoples opinions on this setup.. I realise that the turbo will run out of puff at around 320-330 rwhp and 18-19 psi but it should be very responsive and a great midrange. The highly ported manifolds should help with the hp resriction people say the stock manifolds have?
On top of this setup im torn between water methanol injection or a 50 wet shot of n2o to help bring down intake temps when running 18+ psi. They are both the same price. I'll try get some pics up soon! Just finished welding up a jig for the manifold. Let us know what you think.

what size is your cooler? 100mm thick core should be enough to keep things cool, with water spray, thats as cheap as you can go, then C02 spray, then water meth injection, nitrous. it just keeps progressing from there until you go bigger turbo, larger injectors, fuel pump etc.

for a cheap and reliable turbo, you could pick up a 2nd hand holset hx35 or hx40 for around $300. to keep intake temps down and air volume up.

325rwhp @ 15psi is not too shabby :-)

your fabricating a Y-piece from the ported stock manifolds to mount the single? is that correct?

Yes thats right walter, looks like reece plumbing might sell the buttweld joins i need so thats handy. My cooler is 75mm thick 600x300. I really just wanna see if i can get an 11 out of it with this setup plus a cooling aid, cooling is cheap horsepower i think, in a zoom article a silvia with a t67 and large cooler made 18rwkw more just from water spray on the intercooler and only a 5*c drop in temp. I'll be saving my pennies for an EFR turbo, no lag 600hp of flow and comes with wastegate, bov and boost controller fitted. What sort of flange does the holset have?

You are not allowed to use any kind of water spray on intercoolers at drag racing tracks ! Highly dangerous as it wets the track .

Also you will get booted for using it , trust me they will know too !

I would run e85 and n2o ! Or even just e85 . Has great cooling properties and makes easy power on boosted cars . Otherwise a wet 50 shot .

Sounds good . I can't see why the stock ported manifolds into 2 won't work on a soarer , Martin did it years ago on a supra with twin kkr on a 2jz . It made 400rwkw with cams :-)

Good luck and keep us updated .

o0o0o my bad. forgot this was on the strip. lol. no water spray then :-)

the y-piece isnt a drama at all, as long as you keep everything nice and flowy, reducer pieces where needed, no harsh jumps in pipe sizing :-) and good flowy wastegate exit. not some 90 degree 'whatever fits' type job.

looking forward to your results mate :-)

Ok so i got a good tax return.. :-) So ive ditched the $100 unknown condition kkr 430 in favour of a freshly rebuilt presicion billet 6262 plain bearing with .82 t3 housing. Very cheaply i might add. This way i can still use the home made manifold and uses the same flange. It was off a nine sec civic.. say no more :-)

How much boost ? And what's the spring pressure rated at for the wastegate ?

Small wastegates run big boost well , bigger wastegate for smaller boost

Hey Walter, what kind of power figures can be expected at the wheels from a holset turbo setup on a 1jz?

Not ready to do e85 up here in qld.Have a shift kitted auto with 240k on it so dont know how long it will last.. The civic guys seem to love these turbos. Running 47 psi and 840 whp!

from what ive read. 350hp and up to 650ish. hx35 spool rate is reasonable, depending on rear housing. and they are bush bearing but pretty damn bulletproof compared to a lot of other turbo's

hx40 is also ok if you like a powerband up top :-)these are rated around 700hp again depending on rear housing. split pulse exhaust housings you can have a larger A/R number and still have good response. 1.06 split pulse is between .86 and .96 response wise.

every engine is different tho. plus supporting mods obviously.

thought i would share this. holset turbo's destruction testing of their own and 'good' chinese copies.

shows you why genuine is better. R&D doesnt just go towards more of everything for bigger power figures. its about reliability and safety. pretty shocking to think what potential 'bullets' are spooling up out there.

Steam pipe y pipe off ported manifolds, wastegate and screamer pipes, a big cooler mounted (114mm). dump pipe, highflow cat and muffler all 3inch mandrel full system for $1600 so im happy to pay that and get it done with aussie materials not cheap stuff.
