change the thermostat, then be aware that the engine getting really hot, can cause scale to be loosened from inside the engine water ways, which in turn accumulates in the lower third of the radiator(regardless of age or condition), adding to the the problem. Needs bottom tank removed and core flushed.

Mate I had exactly the same issues as yourself, do yourself a favour and find someone that either acid dips your radiator or can replace it with a new radiator. Should be able to get the whole thing done for under $350, I got mine for $200 but that's because I knew the bloke through his son. That was for a new radiator installed but acid dipping works extremely well too, whichever is cheaper probably acid dipping.
Let us know how you go, I changed my thermostat initially with no result and being older car's chances are it's the radiator. Do that then if he doesn't fill it full of radiator fluid for you (mines didn't because it was new it was only full of water for 100kms he said then I put in the radiator fluid) buy the red one in concentrated form, get a bucket and an empty 2 litre cordial bottle and away you go mixing it all together and putting it in.

sounds like the thermostat, but if you change that then you might as well get the system flushed. The radiator in my TT is about 5-6yrs old and I just put in a new water pump, new thermostat from Toyota which is 82 degrees same as the old one I pulled out, put in Toyota's red coolant and my temp sits on half. A month later (just now) a heater hose starting leaking badly and a smaller hose at the front was spraying red coolant everywhere so while that was getting fixed I had my mechanic replace it with the green coolant made by Nulon, so if another hose breaks he can just top the system up as he doesn't carry the red stuff. Plus the Toyota coolant is a bit pricey. No temperature change after all was done, doesn't get hot or anything.

Ok, i changed the thermostat, even tho when tested the old thermostat worked ok.. have used toyota coolant to refil the radiator, but after driving in the heat today it overheated but the temp guage was still half way ?

The temperature guage indicates either half way or 1notch above, when you lift the bonnet you can quite clearly hear the water boiling in the radiator..

Even before and after flushing the cooling system ? Im going to change the rad next as its an aftermarket 1that is in it and from the way it only gets hot in hot weather i reckon it could be the prob, my next question is, can i get an alloy rad that has a gear oil cooler built in or will i have to buy a standard main dealer rad ?
