I had that same decision when my auto box started slipping.. I chose to go manual because of two reasons.. 1st I was planning to do a lot of track work and manual was the only way to get the best out of the car.. 2nd The hole feel of control over the car.Along with the 370hp at the wheels. After a few years and track days along with drag runs.. I do miss the auto's ability to stall up and let go at the lights.. The auto wins from a launching point of view and with a beef'd up auto would be magic.. So it comes down to what you want out of the car and what you plan to use it for.. General street use I'd beef the auto up.. Also I didn't do the manual change and it set me back $7500 drive in drive out with new r154 box trd 6puck clutch and trd lightened flywheel.. So it blew out more then I thought and could have had the auto beef'd up for a lot less.. So again it's what you use it for.. I don't regret in any way going manual as it doe's come alive with a manual..

i made a bit back by selling parts so mine came in a bit cheaper i managed to get a half cut with everything i needed, minus the tail shaft for $3500 +$600 for tail shaft mods. +$180 for clutch new slave cyl+ line. +$300 for misc bits and pieces (shifter surrounds, fluids etc)
so as it turns out wasn't exactly "everything" i needed but the main bits where there, plus i then had spares of everything as i had a whole engine.
so it was around 4.5k before i made any money back. also swapped over to a lsd at the same time as i picked one up for $700.
i dont think you'll be getting everything you need for $1500, maybe just the gear box. also there's quite a bit of modifying to do like cutting holes in the center well for gear sticks etc (or bending of shifter depending on which version of the R154 you get)

Honestly budget 4.5-5k for a completed manual conversion. You may pick up bits and pieces cheap but end of the day it will cost you near enough to this by the time it's all done.
Manual sucks for driving in traffic, so if you daily the car even a little bit then stay auto. It gets worse when you start chasing power and end up with button clutches and whatnot.

ok decided to stick with auto, was doing a search awhile ago and there's a bloke that deals with soarer's in adelaide but cant remember who it was does anyone know who does the quick shift boxes in adelaide and prices if i just take the box up to them?? on another note has anyone changed the y pipe on the turbos from studs to bolts?? (to make it easy to pull out later) and who does dumps for the tt as the threads i have been searching are like over 5,6,7 years old.

Your thinking of micheal from mv automatics. I have one of his shift kits and couldn't recommend him Enoth, He knows a lot about soarer autos and is happy to help over the phone. I'm going to eventually get him to build my box.
Sorry if my spellings a bit off not a strong speller

the m.v autos stage 1.5 shift kit in my first soarer was awesome. the fully built m.v autos box with 1.5 shift kit and 3200 stally in my new soarer is even better haha. highly recommended mod for any auto, soarer or otherwise. the shift kit will extend the life of the box aswell due to less slippage of the clutches
I have a MV 1.5 Shift kit in my Soarer, Shifts great, do not listen to the people who say you feel a huge thump and clunk that is probably if you have worn out driveshafts you will.
A stage 1 would be the best choice for people who want something more smoother
