Hey guys, I just got another jzz30, it's been a few years and I'm loving it! I've driven a couple hundred k's in it so far, no problems at all but I noticed right away that the speedo wasn't functioning properly. I'm not sure if this is "blinky dash".

I'm a mechanic by trade so normally I solve these problems myself but I'm a bit lazy when it comes to electrical problems, I just send them to the auto sparky... Basically what happens is when I'm driving under about 95k's (it appears to work fine at 100k's) the speedo bounces around all over the place, usually a few k's either side of the speed I'm going. It sits on the correct speed for a second, say 50k's for example, then it'll flash around 47 then 60 then back to 45 etc, you get the idea. This happens very quickly though and is constant while driving. I do have the option of buying another dash for fairly cheap but I'd rather not as I'd like to keep my k's legit and they're reasonably low anyway (low k's soarers are getting rare in NZ), unless the problem is at the gearbox end with the speed sender, in which case I'll get a new one!

Has anybody else had this problem and if so how did you fix it?
Aside from that issue, I'm stoked with the car. It's fairly standard, lowered on nice 18's, lsd, straight body and good paint. Interior was disgusting, looked like it'd been sitting in someone's work shop for years and just got chucked in so I got it a professional groom on the weekend, looks like new (but still a little bit damp, with that nasty wet carpet smell).

Cheers in advance!

hey Tim i had this problem only worse when i did my manual conversion and it turned out to be a faulty speed sensor. but you should check out the speed sensor nylon gear before you rush out and by a new speed sensor as its only about $40 for the gear and over $300 for the sensor. best of luck with it matt

yeah tim, i had a similar problem, where my speedo started being erratic then basically not working

how the speed sensor works is there is a worm wheel on the output shaft in the gear box, this worm wheel drives a small nylon cog, cog spins some magnetic sensor magic happens and it sends the signal to the speedo.

what happens is the cog wears, so it wont spin properly. and hence the dodgy speedo

my problem was i replaced the cog only to have it get chewed out as well. for what ever reason sometimes the worm wheel can become rusty/corroded this then chews out the nylon in no time. it wasn't really a hard job to do and being a mechanic you should be able to rip off the extension housing on the gear box to get at the worm wheel.

here's the pictures of the plastic cog and speed sensor

Yep speed sensor. Very easy to change, we did it on my brothers TT and all works well now

Cheers guys, just as helpful as I remember!
I'll have a ring around the wreckers and see what I can find!

In Wellington we have this magical place called Pick a Part, hundreds of cars in a massive yard (arranged by manufacturer) there for parts, b.y.o tools and take whatever you want, it's pretty cheap too but I doubt there will be any soarers there, but could be worth a look.
