Ok I've done some searching around about the speedo jumping and I've replaced the little worm but the problem is still there,i have a spare sensor there could that be the problem, or did I just replace one damaged worm with another. Thanks all

Daniel,
it will be the actual sensor that the helical drive (white plastic cog) fits into. Had this same thing with mine and the s/hand one I put in was U/S as well, so third time lucky.
It did all sorts of weird things, like changing out of overdrive when in cruise control back to third then after a while would change up again.

I replaced the metal worm with the cog on the end of it, with a second hand one , from what I can tell I have to replace the internal part the the cog slides into? If so is this part hard to come by , and what sort of price. Thanks

ok, i've done the job your thinking about undertaking which is replace the worm.
but just to help you a bit your getting terms mixed up a bit. the white plastic bit is actually called the "worm wheel/gear" the worm it self is located in the gear box
picture i stole off google, but imagine that worm being on the output shaft in the gear box in the same arrangement it is now, and the gear is the plastic cog on the speed sensor. so the faster the output shaft spins the faster its going to spin that cog. the sensor the wheel sits in use's magnets and black magic to determine how fast the car is going. i think the magnets spins from the cog, creates an electric current and the computer determins that x amount of current = y speed (dont quote me on that though)
but what happened in my case (and a few others) is that the metal worm in the gear box gets rusty for what ever reason, and the rust slowly chews up the plastic cogs meaning the speedo can't determine how fast your going.
so mine would show the speed for a bit, then jump around and eventually wouldn't show a speed at all just 0 as the cog was that worn it couldn't mesh with the worm.
honestly i'd try another sensor first and see if that fixes your issue but if you want to swap the metal worm you can get a brand new one through toyota part number:33481-30060\u, i wouldn't go 2nd hand as your rust problem might be there already and i dont remember it being that expensive, maybe $40 - $60
but you'll need to: drop the trans fluid remove speedo sensor unbolt the exhaust unbolt drive shaft from diff and bearing undo (7i think) bolts holding extension housing to gear box use circlip pliers to take off worm gear retaining clip swap worms over
reinstall clip reinstall housing - you may need a new gasket or use a silicon/gasket maker, you may also want to consider replacing your output shaft seal as well reinstall prop shaft reinstall exhaust put some new trans fluid in
there maybe some more to it with undoing clips and bits and pieces on the extension housing.

Did a search most sites are in America and don't post, called castle hill Toyota , they sold 1 last week ( last one) so 2 -3 week wait if its in stock from Japan, I'm just going to try all the Toyota dealers and see what they have. Does Any one know of a dealer that deals with a lot of soarers that I should start with?
