I've just bought a '91 Soarer that's had a single turbo (Kinugawa TD06H-25G) installed. This turbo has an internal wastegate and I'm wondering what's the general consensus on whether an external wastegate is better or not or doesn't matter??

Generally an external wastegate will have better provisions for flow control, where as an internal wastegate may cause the boost levels to spike depending on the set pressure. How ever if you already have a turbo & manifold setup for an internal wastegate it would be much easier to replace with a turbo that incorporates an IWG, otherwise you will need to get the manifold heavily modified or replaced if its a cheaper option.
