After trying all the usual methods including a rattle gun I used the rope in number one cylinder. Success. Now I cannot turn the engine anti clockwise to release the tension in the cylinder and remove the rope. Can anyone help me?

I have never tried it that way & I would not recommend it & i hope it was on compression stroke so no valves were open ..
You will need to turn it clockwise now as you would have been turning it anti clockwise to undo it originally, so slip the harmonic balancer on & try & turn it by hand or if that doesn't work remove the balancer & slip some sockets or such over the bolt to reduce the thread length of the bolt & re insert the bolt into the crank & then turn it with a socket clockwise ..

Thanks for the replies. I am an idiot, I should of realised that if the nut came off anti clockwise then it would go back on clockwise then tightening the bolt again would release the tension on the rope in the cylinder. All done now, thanks.
