Can anyone tell me if non vvti and vvti 1jz igniters are the same or not?

Part numbers are different on the EPC. Might give an initial indication that they are different. I'm assuming they are different as the HKS DLi is available with a plugin harness for the VVTi model, but not the standard 1JZ igniter pack.

hmm, thanks mate.

Reason I ask is that somebody said that running my car in waste spark with the stock igniter may not be a good idea. I figured if the vvti and non vvti were the same then no harm done. So, I am left wondering then.

Not sure.

I'm making ~350rwkw using the stock igniter pack from the 1JZ (+ HKS DLI) if that's any help. But running factory config, which I'm guessing is sequential and not waste spark. Does that sound correct?

that is the million dollar question: is stock ignition waste spark or sequential?

If it is waste spark then all is good and I can do the same as you and shouldn't have any problems either.

If it is sequential, then is it ok to use as waste spark instead.

VVTi uses a 3 channel igniter for waste spark unlike the 6 channel igniter for sequential spark used by the twin turbo 1JZ-GTE.

The igniter was frazzled on our new vvti car- as we also have a non-vvti car we though to substitute. No go, even the plugs are different. Ended up with a new igniter, at a nice price thanks to Don Bagnall:-)

ok, so that looks like a no go then.

So the way I see it my options are:

1. get a waste spark igniter and 3 dual outlet coils and mount them somewhere. Need leads as well obviously.

2. Go for a set of ls1 coils (inbuilt igniters) and leads.

3. Sell wolf get microtech and use inbuilt igniter and stock coils. (I know this works as 1jz747 has 470rwhp with this exact setup)

And that is it I think.

Opinions?

buy an EMS, install it with ease by copying my set-up, then get a EMS ignitor and some dual coil packs, some 9mm top gun leads and bobs your uncle :P

about $1500 later and shes done :-)
