The story goes a bit like this:

My Soarer had developed a little bit of a miss above 5000rpm. When under full throttle it'd give a bit of a splutter and continue on. I thought I'd throw in a fresh set of plugs seeing as it hadn't ben done since I've owned the car and I'd done about 36000km on them. Recommended seems to be NGK BKR6E for standard 1JZs. The closest I could find in the lame range up here is BKR6E-11. I pondered whether there'd be a difference but decided I'd whack 'em in anyway and see if they made a difference.

Tried to fire the car up after fitting them and no go. Engine wouldn't start turned over fine but would start. I came to the conclusion there must be a difference in the plugs I got and put the old ones in there. At least they worked. Or so I thought. I got the car running but it sounded it was running on 4 cylinders and stalled shortly thereafter. Double-checked everything was on properly and everything was done up nice a tight. Still nothing. At this point I'm thinking "How could I up changing spark plugs so badly???"

Decided I needed more help at this point and called in the experts. The mechanic reckoned he extracted ECU error Codes 12 - No RPM Signal to ECU while Cranking and 14 - No Ignition Reference Signal. They thought this may have something to do with the Crank Angle Sensor, but decided they were not Soarer (or 1JZ) literate enough to do the job. Translated: They didn't know what they were doing and couldn't be finding out. At least they were honest about it.

Being in Darwin there's not really a lot of knowledgable people on Imported cars and they could only give me one name as a referal. I figured that I may as well have a crack at trying to get this thing going as by having a crack, I'm already one step closer than my mechanic to solving the problem.

Sorry about the essay, but what I'd like to know is:
Is there something I may have knocked whilst doing the job that would cause these problems?
Are the spark plugs I've chosen the right ones for the job?
Where should I be looking first? Give me ideas, I'm willing to learn.

Much appreciated.

I know error 12 is cam angle sensor, front one i think. There is also error 13 which is pretty much the same thing. However I had error 13 last week and we found it wasn't the cam angle sensor, but rather the wiring around the ecu. It appears there was some noise that was causing the signal to be erratic which in turn caused the engine to drop out randomly under throttle (stock soarer wouldn't do this as they can run one 1 sensor ok, i got it cause my piggy ecu needs both cam angle sensors working). Problem seemed to fix itself up when we got to the ecu and moved it around. Hasn't come back since.

Error 14 maybe a bad plug on one your coilpacks. Check em all out, if their cracked or generally look s***, replace them. I think I remember having this error some time ago.

Cool, Thanks Ben. I'll check it out tomorrow arvo in the light. The coil packs looked pretty good when I had them out, I'll double check though and make sure they're all good.

The -11 on the plugs means 1.1mm gap, great for V8's not great for TT's. (Ask Gary Morris about this some time) :-)

The plug connectors to the packs get brittle and crack, worth replacing them even if you don't think they need it.

code 14 is possibly the ignitor module

I've got the same code on my JZA70 atm, but my ignitor is fine all the wiring and coil packs appear to be fine (haven't tested fully yet) so that leaves it to the ECU being borked in my case

Aha, 11 just means 1.1, that's to easy. I gapped them to 0.8mm. Thanks for that info, Peter. Sounds like I've got the right ones.

John: Ignitor is one thing I've been told for Code 14. Will check it this arvo after work.

There's a bit of oil around the boots of the coil packs, is this something to be concerned about?

Apart from that, the coil packs themselves look fine. Am playing with it at the moment, so any other suggestions, fire away.

Check the connectors that connect to the coilpacks. They break over time.

Where is the Ignitor Module?
What does it look like?
