It was up to 5.1-5.2L for me cause i drain it for a while and I also jack the car up at different angles after its drained for an hour to get all of it out. It was just a bit above the full mark when i did this.
I now have the shift performance oil cooler and filter relocation so its more like 6L now. Note also that I found the levels are harder to get once you have an oil cooler on. For example on the weekend i checked it and it was about 3/4 full on the stick. Had sat there for a while for that check. I then checked it on tuesday straight after driving and it was at 1/4 of full. The reason I checked it again is because I was getting low oil pressure a couple of times at random when starting, that would disappear so quickly you could barely memorize the jap before it disappeared. After filling it up, haven't seen low oil pressure since.

Normally with an oil cooler my car takes just shy of 5L (probably about 4.8L) However after an engine build and adding a remote filter and extra piping as well, from completely empty to full on the dipstick took about 7L!

so whats this rear sump all about and where is the dipstick for that one? ive never heard of a rear sump/dipstick. i take it the dipstick just next to the throttle body is for the front sump.

Anton, I do understand that if there are issues with the engine already, it culd certainly makes things worse. Although, on a good engine I figured it would be okay?
Any reason why you would particularly not worth doing? Id appreciate some insight, i dont want to be harming anything long term.

The reason is that you are removing the oil that is covering the engine parts. By removing this oil film you are presenting metal to metal, which causes un-necessary wear until the engine builds up oil pressure again (which may seem fast, but in 1000's of rpm it is not).
The little 'used' oil that is left over in the engine after draining it, will not harm it. I would also caution against leaving the engine to drain over night too, it's really overkill.
If you change your oil and oil filter regularly, and run a turbo timer after you have given your car a hard drive, then it will be fine.

I do my oil changes @ 7000km's with fully synth. 5000km seems like over kill, especially with a fully synth oil. 5L will take the oil just past the full mark, thats using a ryco filter and drain for about 1/2 hour.
Hey guys, since there seems to be a little debate, I have the exact numbers. Luckley my Soarer came with manuals and a bunch of service records from Japan. Teaching myself a little Japanese the manual reads as follows.

I try to get 5litres in,or close to it . it reads overfull on the dipstick when cold, but by the time it throws oil up into the head and block, the sump level will be fine when running. I do this slight over fill to reduce the chance of running a bearing when accelerating really fast, after a big launch at the drags on sticky tires.
After draining for about half hour mine takes about 5 and a quarter till it reads full on the dipstick. Then I overfill it another quarter of a litre. Also how often does everyone change oil? I do mine about every 3000

I changed my oil over the weekends with it jacked to lean over the drivers side slightly, left it to drain for about 15mins and it took a whole 5L to fill it to full on the dipstick. Which I'm happy with. I don't want to keep or have to buy anymore than 5L. Its just more convenient that way.
I also used a valvoline oil filter. Are they suppose to be the better ones? That costs me about $12 at Supercheap Auto. I could buy a generic one for much less... but eh..

It's supposed to take just under 5litres (about 4.8 or so). If you are only putting 4 litres in, you should be worried. Borrow someone else's dipstick and compare. or
My dipstick from the top of the handle to the full mark measures 564mm. It also has these numbers above the full mark....15301-88401

As ewe can see from the following dip stick part number page, there are 2 different sticks for the 1JZ's, and 2 for the 2JZ's. So check your dippy sticks to ensure that the numbers match for your particular year.
Disclaimer type thingo: This is all dependant on you having the ORIGINAL donk, or a replacement donk that was supplied WITH the correct dippo sticko
