Hey guys, title says it all. I just got a new soarer and preparing myself for the every 5,000k oil change / filter change just would like to know what type of filter I need for my car and whats the best oil for a twin turbo. Its a 1994.

Thanks.

Probably been preached to death, but synthetic motor oil is most praised on these forums. I found Mobil 1 10-30 to fair well, the Mobil 1 5-50 wasnt liked by my motor (i can tell when its happy ;) ) - Probably too viscid being a 50w.

Im currently using a semi-synthetic MOTUL oil, turbolight technosynth 10-40w and the car hasnt ran better. It costs about $40 from your local Repco store, but is a bit hard to find sometimes.

- Mobil 1 5-50w $65 > cold climates, hard driving. 5w is thin for startup, may smoke.
- Mobil 1 10-30w $90 > good for aussie climate, toyota said 10-30w from the factory so its the best suited oil for these cars. Also very good oil. Period.
- Motul 10-40w $40 > cheaper, good for aussie climate, a bit of extra top end protection without going overboard.
- Shell 5-40w $50 > fully synth, cheaper than mobil 1 5-50w, possibly not as good. Also thin for aussie conditions and these motors in general.
- Castrol Gold 5-30w > $?? fully synth, overall thin oil, increased oil consumption, i dont recommend for these motors.
- Castrol Gold 10-60w > $??, fully synth, thick oil, good if you do alot of high RPM driving, but generally too viscid for a 1JZ.

Use a Genuine Toyota Filter, or a Ryco 418 (off memory).

Also change your spark plugs if you havent done so already, most of us use NGK BKR6-E plugs, gapped with a feeler guage to 0.8mm standard, or 0.7mm when running ~13psi+. A set will cost under $25. A feeler gauge 'set' costs about $20 in stainless steel.

Holy Crap I have no idea what you just said :-)

I am trying to learn the technical stuff. So where do I get a genuine toyota oil filter from? and how often should I change my spark plugs?

Thanks for the info

Best oil filters are available from Jeff Harper - see F1 Kits from the main menu.

Call up a toyota dealer or talk to Jeff regarding oil filters.

I change spark plugs every 5,000kms - only because i use the copper NGK series and run over 200rwkw. Many of the guys here prefer to use copper plugs and change them often.

I gather your car is standard Vaughan?
Use the gold bottle Mobil 1 10-30W from Repco, and a toyota oil filter. The 1JZ-GTE takes 4.3 litres of oil with a new filter on sucessive changes and upto 4.5 litres bone dry. Put in 4L first and measure the level the next morning.

After a recommendation from our illustrious leader (ie Neil), I have been using Penrite semi-synthetic for the past 18 months. IMHO the engine is now running the smoothest ever. And this opinion has been formed after running shell, mobil, ulx, motul, elf, castrol, etc, etc. Maybe it's because I'm nearing 200,000km that the difference between them is just so un-noticable, or maybe it's because an Australian company (penrite) has finally got an automotive product right!

Either way, at $32 a bottle, and $4 for a ryco filter, you just can't go wrong.
