Hi there,

I am having some problems with my power steering, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I had the pump and belts checked and they are perfect, no problems... But, the steering becomes very heavy ONLY when I am applying the Brake and trying to steer, like when I am parking. I am no mechanic, however, I noticed that the idle is around 600rpm normally. When I am in Park or Neutral and apply the brake and steer, the idle goes to around 800-900rpm (which I know is normal). BUT, when I apply the brake and try to steer in drive or reverse, the idle remains constant at ~600rpm.

I happens when the car is at normal temp.

It is for this reason I think it is simply an idling problem, but wanted to get feedback from some more experienced soarer owners...

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

I've put up with this problem for about 10 months mate, as far as I know it's due to a faulty pressure switch that raises engine rpm when steering lock is detected.

Easy way to get round it, keep your power button on, and chuck it in second around corners.

At idle, give it a quick rev and steer quickly.

Or just get it fixed haha

I replaced the pressure switch, and still had problems.. was getting stuck due to some scoring in the housing...

ended up getting a replacement pump and resealing it. no more problems after that :D

Ok, thanks guys. I will look into getting it fixed. Is replacing the pressure switch easy? Can it be done yourself?

Thanks,

Cheers

Well... I'm glad I didn't fork out to get the switch replaced then.

So you reckon it'd be better worth my money getting a new power steering pump, and have it resealed? If the pump is in good condition, should I still reseal it?

Cheers
