Kanchana, All of japans tuned performance vehicles, were designed and tuned to run on 100RON Unleaded fuel. The closest we have is 98 in most cases, so this is why its advised to use 98 octane fuel. Also, usinf a lower Rated fuel, Normal unleaded at 92 ron as opposed to 98, means the engine is more prone to detonation and running hotter. This can be bad.
I have always found to get better performance and economy out of 95 and 98 fuel. 92 rated fuel or normal unleaded is ok on cars designed for them, like your average Falcon or comodore 6 cylinders.
So appart from making the most power from fuels, Its not about power for all of us or most of us. Its about using what is closest to the manufacturers recommendation. Open up a filler cap on most HSV's and FPV's and it says PREMIUIM UNLEADED ONLY.
I hope this helps you a little, and im sure more people will add some more comments to help you out

Kanchana, is your question whether 98 improves mileage (as it appears to ask) or whether that improvement is worth the difference in price?
Over a year ago I wrote on the old ALSC that I recorded a clear improvement in mileage (across a few months) but proportionately less than the difference in price. So far as I recall, the experience of many other people here is consistent with that experience.
When the price increases then the value of shifting to the higher octane improves, yet the instinctive reaction of many buyers is to save cash by avoiding the more expensive 98 in those circumstances.
For clarity, these questions do not affect me because my car is tuned specifically for 98, for performance reasons in which you are not interested, so I would lose all round by purchasing the cheaper lower octanes even if the price were to fall.

Didn't realise that there was THAT much difference, will be using 98 in my TT from now on. BUT, I did get 570km from 60L normal unleaded with some town driving... Not too shabby!
Hey, why not use optimax?? why is ultimate better, i was told that optimax was better for higher revs, i guess i was wrong, i just figured 98 is 98 no matter which place you get it from

Interestingly enough my Soarer has one of these stickers on the inside of the lid that says UNLEADED ONLY. It even has the original Japanese writing on it which I assume means the same thing (same font & colour). How does this explain it then?

Unleaded as opposed to Leaded, Will. It is not commenting on the grade of unleaded.
My Lexus (the one sold new in Australia) also merely says Unleaded in the filler. In the manual it recommends a minimum of 95 but grants that the car can be driven on 92 if that is all that is available.

I think it's because Ultimate and 8000 has a minimum rating of 98 but Optimax has maximum of 98. Sneakily worded! Just my 2 cents though!

Because it's a Jap car. Jap unleaded fuels are 100 octane or more. Doesn't need to say 'PREMIUM'.
