Hello when i start my car and its idling, there is this odd noise coming from the area of my fanbelt and timing belt... like a slight continual scratching noise?

anyone else experiences this?

i had the 100k service done at 90,000km's... and the car has now done 145,000kms?

thanks for your help

Check tensioner bearing and P/S pump for noise.

I use a short piece of hose, hold one end to my ear then the other to the area I suspect the noise to be coming from, a bit like a stethoscope.

A screwdriver also works well for this. Hold the metal end against the part and put your ear on the handle.

WATCH OUT for hair and fingers and shirt sleeves when working around rotating components.

Screwdriver isn't good on moving components as it needs to touch whatever is making the noise. I find just having the hose close helps and is a LOT safer. Which is why I didn't mention the screwdriver technique.

Yes, BUT, every moving part is attached to a fixed part....

I had the same problem, it was the tensinor pully bering. I could tell with a long screwdriver on the tensinor and my ear on the screwdriver.
A handy hint if it is the tensinor pully:
Toyota doesn't sell the pully on its own, you have to buy the whole mechnisum.
so what i done is took my pully to repco and they mesured it with the verniers and got me one (i think of a ford telsta) wich is the same size and STEEL not plastic and only $24

my car does the exact same thing. I reckon it has got to be the serpentine belt tensioner bearing. Mine started screaming a few months back and ever since I have been spraying it with TAC 2 spray grease to shut it up once a week ;)

But I usually only get the noise after for eg i've driven home from work for lunch and start it back up to go back. Then and only then will it make the noise.

$800 for a v-belt tensioner? Are you sure they weren't trying to sell you a timing belt tensioner? Even then thats way OTT.

Its right in the middle of the front of the engine, right above the harmonic balancer pulley - you can't miss it. Its very easy to replace too.
