Hey guys,
Looking to get semi-serious in terms of some power upgrades, as the list follows will tell:
*current stock 1J apart from the following: - HKS fmic (lew's old one) - Catback exhaust - BFI (which im about to do today)
I have just purchased the following: -Hi-flowed steel wheel CT12s-5000kms since rebuilt -440CC injectors with 1week old orings -E-manage & harness (full harness) tuned at 16psi with this turbo and injectors set up -Walbro Fuel pump
*with plans to buy the following before installing all of the above: - EBC - Dump/Front/Cat
And then get it all tuned.
Now the problem I face is.. this is going to (I would hope) get me a decent power figure, going by previous mod's performed on TT's 250 wouldnt be out of the question.
BUT.. will the stock diff and gbox hold up?
This is where I face my dilema.. do I put all of the above in and try to get a "safe tune" - or is that pointless.
Do I just chuck in the turbo's/dump/front/cat and leave that as is until I can afford a new diff?
Or do I do nothing and leave all these cool parts stashed away for a long time =(
What should I do??
btw im not planning on running much boost - 1 bar at most.

Id recommend for you to get Stage 1.5 Shift kit for the gearbox and try and get your hands on a LSD if you can.
Depending on how your car was looked after and treated in Japan, Your open wheeler Diff might not handle the extra power.
But if you do all the mods, id get it tunned to its potential. No point getting a tune then going back and paying more money to get it tuned again for more power.

i hate to say it but with that power and the way the factory auto slips and grinds it's way into each gear i doubt it would last very long at all. u'd have a box full of neutrals fairly quickly. In saying that i have a mate who has one with only a trans cooler and no shift kit, and that has held 235rwkw for almost a year without any sign of slipping. I just wouldn't do it without a shift kit stage 1 at least. Please give us an idea on what kickdown stories you've heard???
i've got a shiftkit and the only time i ever have to worry is when going from say 100kph in the rain and then getting up it, having it kickback to 2nd and it will start to wheelspin obviously. I've never had a bad story to tell about one in the dry except they are heaps of fun, and the longer you have one, you will learn to drive the car without getting the clunk into each gear that it will sometimes do.

I have a similar set up to what you plan and can highly recommend the stage one shift kit. I wouldn't go any more than that for the street but that's just me. I wouldn't go any less either (my car killed a gearbox in that sort of trim before I got it, and a diff too).

Thanks for the reponse guys.
Brendan, I was reading about a roundabout kickdown story on here (not sure which threa sorry) which had be a little concerned of the apparent unpredicatable nature of a shift kit. could have been an isolated incident though.
Still considering just chucking the turb's in and finishing off the exhaust and leaving the rest out for now... hmmm...

David, I think that was an isolated story. I have a shift kit and it hasn't adversely affected me on the road whatsoever. You shouldn't be driving hard enough on the roads for it to put you sideways.
