i've been doing a bit of work on cars with a mate who works at an engineering shop lately, and he has suggested that we should look into doing a steel wheel/ hi-flow on my turbos.

i know these guys have rebuilt a lot of pumps but no turbos. a few people there however are switched on with turbo cars having owned a few imports in the past.

my main question is, is rebuilding a turbo something that should be left up to someone who is an expert or will it be safe to leave it with someone who is an experienced fitter, machinist, engineer.

also what is a basic list of parts that should be upgraded/ replaced when rebuilding. this wont be happening for a while as i have other priorities at the moment, its more something i've had on my mind and cant get rid of.

If they don't know what parts to be using, I'd be getting someone else to do it mate. Too much can go wrong if not done EXACTLY right. There's a reason why there are only 2-3 places in the whole country that people here send their turbos to get rebuilt at.

100% correct. If it is not 100% balanced then damage will be done. You need very accurate machinery. If you are 1% off which is mm it will throw everything off which will cause the wheel to hit the housing and cause damage.

You will be looking at around 2500 for a simple Steel Wheel conversion.

Then if you want extra goodies the price will increase from there.

is that just for the job of doin the turbos themselves and NOT labour for taken em off etc.

If so, does that also mean that one could purchase a 'dead' pair of turbos and take them to them and they would make em good as gold again ?

coz dead turbos are cheap (ish) and 1200 isnt too bad (ish) just as long as you know how to pull em off
