A few days ago I asked for info on mechanics who deal with turbos to which I received heaps of replys but now I seem to have a much bigger problem. Driving to work today one of the exhusts has starting billowing out black smoke when accelerating off the lights.I think my turbo has died and gone to heaven. Excusing my ignorance about turbos but is there any way until I get enough money to turn off/disconect that turbo? How much would I be looking at to replace one of the turbos bearing in mind that now one has gone the other is proberly ready to go as well. I could really use your input.

black smoke is fine, that just means your car is running rich, which all soarers do. (unless tuned with a piggy back computer). the black smoke is petrol, nothing to worry about.
start worrying when white smoke is coming out while on boost

The smoke is actually blue/grey, not so much under load but after ive been sitting for a while. When i take off after sitting at the lights for a bit the smoke is quite thick, but gradually goes as i accelarate. It sounds like a bearing is about to sieze or one has siezed and the other is taking all the load.I can hear one coming in then out rapidly at the start of accelaration. Last week i changed the oil and filter twice (10 litres) the problem started soon after this. I then changed the oil and filters three more times (including using engine flush all five times) hoping that a bit of oil sludge may have got jammed in a bearing and i could flush it out .ANY ideas as to what it could be?
Could be either valve stem seals or turbo seals Both costly... How bad is it? If it goes away after a while I wouldn't worry, and I'd probably put in a bit denser oil too, that would be bandaid solution.

So you can hear the turbos making a weird whining noise? That's normal. If it is an irregular sounding whining noise, then it's not good. If you are say flooring it 60% throttle, and after some time your turbos quiten down and you stop accelerating that's normal too... You said you hear one coming in and our rapidly, do you feel it on your car's performance too? You might probably want to be more specific.

I did change the oil type ,I used a semi synthetic engine oil. Im wary of driving the car at the moment as i don't want to do anymore damage to it if it is stuffed. Anybody got any idea how much to replace valve stem seals or turbo seals?

but was the new oil thinner ie. lower numbers?
Valve stem seals are a big job. Can be done with the head on but is quite difficult from what I hear. I think mine might need doing as well but I will just live with it.
Turbo seals are a job for a turbo specialist.

There are plenty of posts on here about costs of both jobs, if it's the turbo seals, they will need to be rebuilt at a cost of around about $2500-$3000 + labour to remove and refit as far as I've read... Keep your eye on the 'parts for sale' forum as a set of recently rebuilt steel wheeled turbos went for about $1800 I think... not that long ago... I'd be keeping my eyes open for something like that I think... Once you've found out what your problem is
