When installed my FMIC,I got my SAFC2 tuned and now find I am hitting the rev-limiter all the time(this happens when I'm on full throttle between gear changes). Is there a fix for this,Will a shift kit fix this?

That is the NOw more noticeable fuel cut ignition thingy. Happens on gear changes to help protect your Tranny. To my knowledge, All the guys recommend a shift kit to help get rid of this problem And also reduce your 1/4 mile times by 0.2 - 0.3 of a second or so. And allow the tranny to last ALOT longer. IM currently talking the mrs into maybe getting the stage 1 kit. time will tell.

Best to do the shift kit as your gearbox is now on an accelerated path to failure. I'm still essentially running a stock box, but its 1.5 shift kitted and large external transmission cooler and it takes the power. Get none of that popping crap on gear changes.

The popping is ignition retard in timed intervals employed to reduce engine power during changes. Theres a toyota tech doc somewhere out there.

Its still enabled after you get a shift kit, the ecu only pops it during the gearchange timespan; if the change is quick enough it may only happen once for example.

Only way to totally get rid of it (best way) is to have a manualised auto with a shift kit; No powerloss, No worries.

Thanks guy's for the info,Shift kit will be next mod.The popping isn't what I was concerned about It was the rev-limit bounce but if the shift kit can fix this that would be great,Kill two birds with the one stone IE:Popping and rev-limit bounce.

So when I get the shift kit,Were is the best place to take it to(In sydney) for a good install with no drama's,Also rough price for kit and fit.

Thanks again.
Ps: I will do a search for this topic but more info would be great.

Update on this. The shift kit did fix my problems. The problems were bouncing off the rev limiter before change of gear and the retarding is gone. The shift kit should have been one of the 1st mods.I'm very happy with the result and recommend that this is done.

After my last run down the 1/4mile I found I'm in need of a transmission cooler.

Chris! When I was at the drags I stalled it up but the guy with the button waited too long then on my car A big red warning pop'd up.So I just took of and had no power for half track,When the transmission cooled down I had full power. That's how I know.

Jeff had the ECT warning message come up after he had been on the stall for a while. ( Damn Starter!!!) Then it went away bout half track. NIall ( the Soarer GURU ) was there that night. I told Jeff it was prob the Fluid Temp, but give Niall a buzz anyways. Niall confirmed our thoughts. And since, has advised Jeff to get an external cooler.

Yeah I run a big external cooler and was stalling up a bit at WSID due to the larger turbo, never had ECT overheating warning. Also did some stall up tests the other night to test boost ramp up and again, no probs with temps.

So, there must be a temperature sensor for the gearbox (oil). I wonder where it is, or where its signal can be picked up easily. It would be good to feed into my microcontroller based monitoring system that I built. I have a few spare analog inputs, and room on the LCD display.

I like to see as many sensor stats as possible! It makes good sense when modifying things to see the effects of the mod, and if it is causing any additional temperature/o2/map etc etc changes. All the sensors on one display, and it was very cheap for me as I have generic microcontroller boards, and just needed to write some code for the chip to take the inputs and display them on an LCD in the console.

I was also interested in the article on doing your own shift kit mod, using a pair of 6mm shims on the end of the accumulator springs. It looks like a simple thing to do, and you get to become familiar with the inside of your gearbox!

I might give it a try. The article (which is well written, with pictures) can be found by searching for "shift kit". Why pay someone else hundreds of dollars to do something that you can do yourself if you have basic tools, and a reasonable amount of intelligence..... Thats always been my philosophy.

I have done it. It is harder but I don't think it is as hard as a 1.5MV kit. They mod the internals to change the oil flow a bit and I think that makes a difference.

I asked Mike at MV Automatics about just doing the shims, he said that you will do more harm than good. They modify a lot more than just the tension on the springs. get it done properly.

Thanks for the advice guys, however, I'd expect a commercial place to say that they "do more", so you better take it to them - they're in the business of making money! (there goes my pessimism again) Mind you, if I saw an itemised list of what they actually did (and no "made up" stuff), then maybe I'd think different. Of course, you are also paying for their labour (or one of their apprentices)..

The DIY sheet I saw showed more than just putting in shims, they showed you how to increase the pressure regulator, and also suggested using some form of oil cooling.. Sounds genuine..

So, there are no takers on how/where the temperature sensor for the transmission is ?? I guess if I look hard enough, I'll find it!

That is the exact same DIY shift kit that I have done :-) It originated from a guy on SF.com and was then copied by a UK soarer club. I posted the link here originally :-)

Stock: there is no temp sensor for the trans?
