I imagine its the way the Auto boxes are designed. They are made to rev out to gain maximum power from the engine. I've got the White V8 Lexus in town and it does the same thing. Revvs to the redline (slugs off around 5500rpm) where the torque starts to die down, hits limiter at 6500rpm if i don't change gear. (done it once!!!)

The ticking noise is also a normal thing. Yours still has the stocko exhaust from what i've heard, so it would only be the metal cooling down. Mine does it as well.

and is yours as really sluggish as they make it out to be?

Yeah Noddy i know who you are!
Only askin bout ticking noise cause ray with the blue TT he's always one my back about getting it checked out cause he reakons it was the catalytic.
and yes it still has the stocko exhaust.

haha why what have you heard???

car is not running all that great needs a little bit of work done to it, but all toyota can think of for its sluggish way is the tappets.
Highway is good it will easily pull out and over take 5 cars easily (hmm not tried of course hehe)

but as everyone keeps telling me cause im always getting hounded by the guys about it being slow, they are not made for racing if you want a more racing type get the TT. But you have to remember this is coming from guys that have never driven soarers or drive the twin turbo ones that are not standard!

but doesn't matter i've got 2 years to think about what i am going to do to it and to actually do the things to it, and deffinately isn't going to be the same car the first time its back on the road again!
its all hush hush so not a sole is going to know whats going on with it.

2 years eh. Lost your lisence or something?

Where does it feel sluggish? The 1UZ gets into its stride above 3000rpm, below that, its a little bit of a slug. Perhaps yours is getting tired (worn out). How many km's are on the clock? Have you tried an engine diagnostics?

Either that, or it just wasn't ment to go fast.. Like my parents Clubsport. You have no idea just how bad it is... Words can't explain just how bad that Clubsport is.......

Kimberly, as Don and Luke have said the ticking noise after you turn off your engine is just your exhaust system contracting. The stock Soarer exhaust system expands due to heat, hence why it will contract after the engine is turned off. This has been covered before and everyone has agreed that it is perfectly normal. A lot of other cars suffer from the same thing.

As for your friend's TT, he probably has an aftermarket exhaust system which is most likely made out of mild steel (standard system is made of stainless), hence why his car doesn't do the same thing as yours would.

Yeah lost the licence for 2 years noddy!
it really doesn't feel sluggish to me cause i haven't been in any other v8's.
but yeah its slow off the starts and takes a bit to answer in drive.
It only has 81***klms on it noddy it had 74*** when i bought it in Feb. and most the klms i've put on it is from going to gladstone and mackay.

As for the ticking I get the whole point about its my exhaust systems thats how it is but there is also the tappet problem as well Vinh.

could your exhaust manifolds be leaking and causing the tapping noise?

So when a car says they have had the 'tappet seal replaced'

Is that indicating that the problem has been solved?

No, on an overhead cam engine, that would mean they have just replaced the seal around the cam cover, which won't do anything for noisy cam buckets (which is more accurate than tappet noise)

You would usually replace the cam cover seal if its leaking oil down the side of the heads (also often a sign that a new pressure release valve is needed)

Would the cam cover need to be replaced, if the engine is mistreated? or is that normal wear and tear with over 100,000km's?

What does the pressure release valve do?

Matthew is probably referring to the PCV valve.
