Thanks very much for the imformation...it is appreciated. Two weeks ago...the car whilst driving smelt of oil and rubber....and then died.
At first I was told it was the timing belt...and there were questions as to whether or not the valves would break fitting this. I was informed later that they would do so, and now need a full motor and motor change. I live near Coffs Harbour, so I'm afraid that Sydney is just not convenient for me....and I will check out all that has been advised. Thanks again.....Jobear58

Glad you mentioned that, I was curious as to why you might need a new engine.

Soarer V8's are non interference which means that if the belt breaks, then engine just stops, no extra damage is done, the valves will NOT hit the pistons and bend or break.

About the only time I have heard of people needing to replace the engine is if they lose all the coolant and cook it.

Definitely get another reliable mechanic to check it out for you.

It's pretty much the same engine as used in the Lexus LS-400 so anyone with experience of those should know what they are talking about.

Good luck! :-)

The pulley bolt will come off using a rattle gun. Depending on if it's siezed or not, it might even come off without having to jam the flywheel to stop movement.

Lew had a V8 in his workshop a while back that had broke a timing belt, and that bent a few valves.

Paul, Scotty has a spare 1UZFE and can spin the crank and cams without any problems.

There was also a broken belt (and the mess) well documented on TIF - no interference problems.

However, it's possible that the later V8's (95 onwards?) with higher compression may have interference issues.

That is what Neil told me Peter.........it's ONLY the pre 1994(ish!) 1UZ's that ARE non interference.

The later ones do go rattle, rattle, crash, boing!

But Joannes car, being a 92 model will be fine

What actually happens in that situation Neil?

You make phone calls to your nearest friendly 2nd.hand 1UZ supplier

Pretty much: Valves get bent outa shape, pistons gain added indent features, and generally the whole thing turns to bollocks in a heart beat, and even more so if ewe is pulling like, 6500rpm at the time of BOING!

OK, but what I don't understand, is that if the engine is non-interference, and the cams and/or crank can be turned independently with no contact (as Peter Scott has done), how can jumping a tooth cause interference to happen?

yer i often wonder about people saying the 1uz will not bend valves if the belt breaks.
i wonder how my valves got bent then .
suppose it could have sucked a rock in or some thing stupid like that.
i did the same thing Peter and tried to turn the crank over and it locked up every time (with belt off)

OK, thanks for that Lew. My belts should be getting done soon, I will see if we can do a rotation test just out of curiosity.
