The ecu keeps learning until you turn off the car and let it cool down completely, So if after jamming the bejeesus up it you proceed to drive home like a nanny it will mostly unlearn all the good stuff. |

Grapnel Exhausts in Balcatta do the Lukey Ultraflows Actually probably any Carline place will have them

Peter N, as i have always liked the sound of your 30. Do you have any X or H pipe ? Have you ever had trouble with the noise level from the authorities?

Thanks Andrew. No balance pipe at all, just 2.5" from the cats to the rear Lukeys, then stock tips. I have never been hassled about it, though one neighbour has asked if I can go a little gently past his place after dark as he gets reverb in the bedroom, though the rest of the house is fine However, if I am aware that authorities are in close vicinity, I try not to draw attention to myself. As the 30 is pretty responsive, I rarely need to use much throttle at all.

Gary, you might ask your chosen exhaust shop if they mind if you supply the mufflers, then shop around for them separately. When I bought mine a couple of years ago, all the exhaust shops were asking $250 each for pretty much any stainless muffler including the Lukeys. I shopped around, eventually got mine for $160 each from a shop that was about to change hands and the owner wasn't too fussed how much he made on them.

Hi peter, thanks for the tip, i got the middle muffler removed, it sounds real nice at low revs, but like a supercharged hairdryer at anything over 3,000rpm, so i think i will get the lukeys and have an x pipe put in at the same time, it does feeel as if it doesnt have the get up and go that it had before the middle muffler was removed, but i can hear it leaking a litle at higher revs, already had it rewelded once as it was leaking real bad, but i think i will do an ecu reset see if it makes a difference? have you ever ysed caltex techron 5000? cheers

Gary, that drop in performance really doesn't sound right to me. Nor does your description of the sound at higher revs. Add that you have already needed to have a leak fixed and still have another leak, and I really wonder what has been going on at the exhaust shop. I would have expected that removing the single centre resonator would have given you a noticeably improved V8 burble and perhaps a slight improvement in performance. What you have done, is remove a restriction, and removed the sound mixing effect of having 2 pipes merge into one which allows the pulses to even themselves out and quieten the car. The reason that balance pipes were introduced to V8's in the first place was to quieten them down a bit. If you now remove the middle muffler pair and replace the rears with Hi-Flo's, you will increase the noise level and reduce restriction a bit more. Then fitting an X-pipe will reduce the noise level again due to the mixing effect previously mentioned. V8's are not as sensitive to changes as the TT's are, less technology in a way (not inferior, just less variables), so minor alterations don't make a heap of difference to performance. If it was my car, I would go find a quiet bit of road, pull the battery terminal off for a few minutes, remove the air filter (in case it's a bit blocked), then do a few ECU training squirts. If you still feel the car is down on power, then it needs investigating. Don't forget to put the air filter back in after your testing. There could be a range of possibilities, perhaps just co-incidental with the exhaust work you have had done. Air filter blocked, fuel filter blocked, cats stuffed, ECU stuffed (does he fit an isolator to the battery when he is welding?) etc. But I seriously doubt that just removing that resonator would make a noticeable drop in performance.

Thanks peter, yes he uses an isolator, come to think of it, the power seems to be getting back to normal a little bit at a time, i did the bfi3, and the muffler removal, but i have not done an ecu reset ever! i think i will give it a go tomorrow morning when i finish work! can you remember off hand what your lukeys cost? i think it all may have a little to do with the leak, as you can hear it quite well when under load! thanks again peter, gary.

Maybe a silly Q'n. Did you get the centre resonator removed or the front two of the four rear mufflers.

Gary, pay attention! I mentioned the cost a couple of posts up! Dan, I am guessing the resonator as Gary refers to it as singular. But I am not too sure either. Gary, you know their are 5 resonator/mufflers under your car (plus 2 cats)?

There are 2 cats, a single centre resonator, then 2 middle mufflers, then 2 rear mufflers.

ah ok, so someone has done previous work on my car, i have: 2 cats leading to a single muffler on each side at the rear, the rears look like the standard mufflers with oval tips, but there are no other mufflers hiding under there!

hey peter, your a true help, i was getting a little confused! ok, i have 2 cats leading straight through to the rear 2 mufflers and thats all, do you think that may be why it is sounding a little strange, ie, nothing between the cats and rear 2 mufflers?

thanks dan, appreciate the hard work taken, yeah someone has removed the 2 mufflers before the 2 rears, does that make sense? but yes it runs 2 straight through pipes from the cats to the rear 2 mufflers, which are standard, perhaps thats why it souds nice and burbly at low revs but a bit rough at higher revs, lukey hi flows should sort that out though shouldn't they?

Gary, That's the most common 'modified' exhaust you will find. 2 cats, then pipe, then 2 rear High flow mufflers. Check that your car doesn't still have the standard rear mufflers fitted.

hi peter, yes thats exactly how mine looks, except for the lukeys!! but im on a mission to find someone to fit some tomorrow! i finish night shift at 6am and have printed off a heap of places im going to visit and try my chances at getting some fitted without having to book it in a week ahead, glorious perth!! thats if i dont have any prisoners escape before the end of my shift!!

Theoretically then, yours should be a slightly quieter version of mine if you still have stock rears. Which should still sound pretty nice. A lot of after market tips can make it a bit raspy if they are flared - think megaphone effect. Which is why I like the stock tips on mine. If the exhaust has already been fiddled, have you checked to see if it has headers or not? Are the cats visible under the car or still tucked up alongside the bottom of the engine?

no, no headers, alas! the cats are still tucked under and covered with some metal bolt on shields, is that stock?
