Another small problem I’ve noticed on my Soarer is when you use the power steering or A/C the pulleys start to make some annoying squeaks, Im guessing these are the bearings? Its not so bad just idling but slightly noticeably

Any ideas? I’ve all ready tried WD40 etc around them but no luck...

It's possibly the belt itself Mike...........sugest some CRC belt lube in the first instance, and then look to other possible causes.

Yeah Im quite sure its not the pulley slipping, its more of a tinking rattle sound from definately the pulleys.. Im sure its the bearings. Its not loud but enough to annoy me.

The idler bearings could be gone.

Yeah Id say thats it, the sound really appears to come from one of the far top left pulleys and maybe the top small right one - Im sure its the two described in the link. Tanks for that. :-)

Mike I had the same problem. I found out which bearing was responsible by blowing a little WD40 into the front of each bearing until the squeak stopped. Having found the right one I had it replaced. Just $35.00 fixed it.

The ol' screw driver test comes in handy for this one. Long screw driver, rest it on different spots with your ear on the end of it while the motor is running (be careful don't want the screw driver ending up in the belt!)

You should be able to tell exactly where the noise is coming from.

I think I've got the same problem. Has been getting louder of late. Shouldn't be the belt, all new. Sounds like a pully/bearing. Did you just order the bearing direct thru Toyota Mike?

I bought mine from coventry's. Probably not as cheap as a bearing place, but they are around the corner from where I work.

Well not long ago I replaced the Idler and Adjuster bearings, they were both rough and now the sound is much reduced.

However the Under Drive pulley sounds bad while the rest are fine, it also has a tiny movement at idle in gear, when revs are increased sound goes away and its perfectly straight - So who knows how this is fixed, do UD pulleys have bearings??

Ken, the bearings are common so if you know the type and size or original part number they are readily available from a number of outlets. Mine was replaced by my mechanic and he told me the information I have passed on to you.

Well I was just at my mechanic today (he has a twin turbo 1UZ supra! :-) ) and he said that Id need to replace the rubber part in between the crank and the crank pulley to stop the vibration and possibly that annoying rattle sound, however that could be another bearing...

So who knows what part number this rubber part is? Im sure some have the parts CD to tell me...

Is there any online guide of how to remove the crank pulley etc?

Cheers Guys

Hes talking about the harmonic balancer (the crank pulley itself). I don't think you can just replace the rubber in it, have to replace the whole unit.

I do know that the jz engines are common for this, and also 2l and 3l toyota diesls.

Removing the crank pulley isn't too hard if you have a puller (you can borrow mine if you want) and a little patience. Just remove the drive belt, undo the bolt, then use the puller to take the pully off the crank.

Don't forget to draw a diagram of the v-belt before you take it off... I also have a puller you can borrow, and a breaker bar if you need it too.

Well, Before I get into details of tools. Where can I get a replacement part? This noise is driving me crazy as its the only flaw I can find mechanically with the car... Part numbers would be most appreciated, plus Id like to have this done in a week or two. Cheers :-)

Mike, try T-Parts in Avondale if you just want a used one and can't find anything on trademe, they usually have at least a couple of 1UZ's on the floor, and you can bargain with them for a good price most of the time. Otherwise just go with Toyota - the guys at Henderson Toyota parts desk seem to know the 1UZ well.

Mr.Beck,

The part number you require from Toyota IS: 13407 - 50030 DAMPER SUB ASSY, CRANKSHAFT UZZ30/31 5/1991 - 9/1997

Hmmm. Gave Toyota NZ in Henderson a call the other day - asked for the price according to the code you gave me Don, Price was $562 + GST.

I guess thats for the entire pulley/ Harmonic Balancer and the rubber section inside... Not exactly what to spend that much on right now. Perhaps I may need to look for a second hand one in good condition.

Or

Can I solve this problem with an Aftermarket light weight main pulley or Under Drive pulley? Any one done this on there 1UZ? Please help! :-)

Still no luck finding a crank pulley..

However Ive been talking to some and he said maybe its the crank bearing and seal? Perhaps some one with the parts cd would be able to see if that part also could have something to do with it and cause a wobble.

Goood! Glad to hear it - At least thats all it could be... Thanks Don

Im going to try hunt around for an aftermarket lightened crank pulley instead of a the $632 option at Toyota - usually they will be a bit cheaper and help performance a tad. Ill have to get a decent one though as its imperative Its has good balance etc.

Mike, at $632 + GST for a new one, you could just add a couple of hundred more and get a whole used 1UZ! Then you'd have your balancer and a fancy garden ornament to boot!
