I've just noticed that my water pump has a chronic leak and will have to be replaced. While my pump has been losing coolant at a great rate for the past few days, I haven't heard any funny noises or had strange performance characteristics, and had no warnings on the dash. The temp has gone up a notch or two. Needless to say I'm not driving it any more until I fix it! I'm wondering what I'm likely to find - should I replace my cam belt, which was apparently only replaced 30K kms ago (I have the receipts)? Does the coolant escaping from the pump actually flow over or near the timing belt and its associated pulleys, tensioner etc? My dilemma is that in Hobart most parts aren't available off the shelf, Toyota is only open weekends on Saturday until midday, so I need to know what I'm likely to need if I want to do this job quickly. Couple of other points. Is it worth risking going aftermarket with the water pump? Is the Toyota one much more expensive? I think I will pay the extra, as I had a bad experience with an almost new Tridon thermostat in my MR2 lately - it stuck shut! And degree of difficulty? It looks like a long but fairly straightforward job to me. I've done a cam belt + exhaust manifold studs + head gaskets in a Nissan 300zx Z31 (VG30ET) with good success and doing the water pump looks easier than this job. I have a good workshop with about 10 versions of every common spanner size spanner, plus air tools + pulley pullers etc.

John, as you have to replace the water pump, the cam belt has to come out anyway, so for a matter of $70 I would replace it. You will also want to replace the welsh plug which is known to leak (and may already be leaking) plus the Idler bearing, tensioner assembly and tensioner if they were not done at the last major service. The advice I was given was to get a genuine Toyota water pump. I guess if you replace the cam belt now and nothing else happens to your car for a few years you will get another 30K between major services.
I was lucky enough to be able to pop in and see the car being worked on whenever I felt like it as my mechanic is in the same street as my work. It is certainly a time consuming job but not overly difficult going by what the he said. You certainly have more experience with engines than I do so you might want to have a crack at it yourself and save yourself a fair wad of cash.
Neil from Rush Imports can help you out with parts, i'm sure he can overnight them to you. http://www.rushimports.com.au/
Bare in mind my car is a UZZ32 but I cant see a UZZ31 being any harder to do, in fact if anything it might be easier.

Michael, thanks very much for your extensive reply to my questions. I reckon I'll go with what you suggest, and I think I'll have a go at the job myself. I doubt that I will own this car for 130000kms, so an extra 30000 kms may not be that significant. On the other hand I don't have any evidence other than a mechanic's receipt from the previous owner to suggest the belt was changed. There's no sticker on the belt case etc, so I think that for piece of mind I may assume that the mechanic charged for the work and didn't do it or the receipt was falsified
