Last night I was driving my Soarer and the catalytic converter light came on, with the alternator not charging battery dash warning. It only does this when the engine RPMs go below about 1500, when I'm coming to a stop at a red light or idling waiting for it to turn green. Anyway, searching on the forums here has brought to my attention that the power steering pump may be leaking and the cause of the problem. Is there any easy way to tell if this is the case? Poking around under the hood didn't bring up any glaringly obvious signs that the PS pump is leaking, but I may not have been looking in the right places. Any advise you guys can give me would be appreciated.

See if you can feel around the P/S pump. If you hand gets wet at all, then you have your answer.

Pretty sure you have the problem though, give it a few days and the lights will be on permanently.

Fix it ASAP.

Okay, I just went and felt around as much as I could around the PS pump, and nothing felt wet. Judging from how common a problem it is though I have a feeling that it is the culprit though.

So what needs to be done? Alternator rebuild and a PS pump reseal? Is there anything specific I should know when I'm phoning around to places to get this fixed?

It MAY just be the alternator Dennis...........

Suggest getting an Auto Electricion to test the output of it.

My alternator just went but power steering was not leaking. same deal the cat light came on. My suggestion is dont get it checked you will be stung for the call out ($66) Just spend $400 and put a brand new one in (or get someone like Lew to do it!!!)Should last another 15 years.

Well, I'm getting the alternator rebuilt tomorrow so I'll ask the guy to check out the pump to see if it's leaking or not. Hopefully not, but if so I guess I'll be calling the Toyota dealership to give them some more of my money. They must love me by now.

Might as well do it for peace of mind. Enjoyment factor might be low if it leaked just after you fixed the alternator.
