I have had some issues over the last couple of weeks so I thought I would post what has happened should any of you guys experience the same problems....
So I was driving home a couple of weeks ago and whilst sitting in traffic happily listening to the stereo I hear a "bing" from the car. I look down to see a Japanese warning which I quickly figure out was the car overheating due to the temperature gauge being off the chart. I swear, pull over, swear again and stop the car. After waiting for the traffic to clear and the car to cool down I topped up with water and drove home.
The next day I had the car checked over by Sports & Luxury cars and Doug tells me the water pump is starting to leak and will need replacing. I knew this was coming so it wasn't a big surprise. Only problem was I couldn't book the car in for a couple of weeks as they were so busy. Generally the pump should last at least a few weeks before going fully tits up....
Then last night I was driving home from the gym when the engine starts to stutter like its having trouble getting fuel. So I pull over into a car park, swear and get on the phone to Da Boss. After suspecting the fuel pump ECU, we tried the diagnostic trick to bypass it but the car still wouldn't start. It was getting late and I didn't want to leave my pride and joy where it was so I swear one more time and call the tow truck.
This afternoon I get home and take a look at the cam belt after speaking with Doug at S&L. Low and behold it had nothing to do with the fuel system (which Rob and I originally suspected), it was a shredded cam belt.
Check out the pictures below....
No wonder the bloody thing wouldn't start! From my limited knowledge I have assumed that the water pump has seized causing the cam belt to kill itself. NOT GOOD!
So now this week will be taken up by changing the water pump, welsh plug, timing belt, cam belt and whatever else needs doing along the way.

Cheers Greg. First thing Monday morning everything will be revealed when we strip it to change the belt and water pump. I will go over everything else while im at it as I don't want to have to touch it again for something like a bearing or pulley.

Good to hear the Boss is doing a telephone warranty service on his cars.
My plan is to get my car up to Neil for preventative work (belt, idler, tensioner) before this happens to me. He just needs to hurry up getting his FULL strut service sorted out so I can do both at the same time.

The thing on the far right is the middle bit from the bearing in the middle of Neil's pics. The ball bearings are melted to what's left of the seal (that the crusty bit on the side of the metal ring) When I purchased my car 4 years ago it has a seized water pump and the previous owner kept driving it until this happened.
The friction generated by the timing belt going around the seized pump heated everything to the point where it actually all fell apart. The previous owner had pulled it all apart just before the repo company took the car away. I bought it at auction as a wreck.
The best thing was that after replacing the water pump, timing belt and bearing bits the engine fired up perfectly - that was 60,000km ago.
I maybe a 'Newbie' on Soarer Central but I have been reading and writing (not that often mind you) since the ALSC forum days - with the number of posts I make I will probably still be a newbie in another 4 years time.

Ripper! No bent valves stems? Not meaning to scare you, just curious as I don't think there would be.
I really hope not! I personally don't know how to test for that but the mechanic hasn't mentioned anything to that effect. When it happened the car lost power and started stuttering (for lack of a better word) like it was being starved of fuel then I pulled over and stopped the engine (I was doing about 15-20Km/h when it happened). I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary that could indicate a bent valve. I will know more on Monday morning.

I'd be interested to find out if you've bent any valve stems. I've heard conflicting reports about whether the Non-VVTi 1UZ-FE is interference or not. Most report that it is not, so I doubt you'll have any issues.

Hey guys, well I finally got my car back today and everything is ok. No bent valves, no tappet noise, nothing, just a sweet running V8 which is noticeably quieter than before. I ended up replacing the following parts
Water pump Cam belt Idler Bearing Tensioner Assembly Tensioner Serpetine belt welsh plug(s) distributor caps rotor buttons cam seals
I am also going to replace the spark plugs and leads in the next month or so.
Its a pleasure to be driving it again, it really puts so many other cars to shame!

Good to hear all is well. I guess your wallet is a little thinner now though.
Yeah it worked out ok, with all the parts and labour it came to about $1300, but work owes me money so they are covering the labour charge. I guess its still my money but at least I didn't have to pay the whole amount out of savings.
