As our cars get older and more tired, it would really be nice if they could talk to us. Particularly if they could verify their service history and kilometers.

Last session at Philip Island, The Wife ran the purple Supercharged Active and it ran like a top all day.

Then Sunday came along, and I only got in two laps before it all faded, running on 6 or 7 cylinders it appeared. Electricals were suspected and as Damo was at the track we tried switching coil packs and igniters, all to no avail!

So in the end we threw the old girl on the trailer and bought her home for surgery.

A few tests were done and on day three I found no compression in Number 5. All other cylinders were averaging 170 - 176 PSI.

Next day I ripped off the rocker covers and had a peek. Now consider that I have had the car for 3 years and do religious 5000 km oil changes. It's my daily driver so it does rack up a few. Clock is showing high 70's now, and 60 odd when I got it.

Here's a pic of the rocker and cam assembly from the Purple car. Note how grotty all of the componenets are. Also, why are the two front cam lobes much cleaner than the rest? Do they starve of oil?

And here's an image of the assembly on a low kilometer engine that has been meticulously looked after for it's whole life (even in Japan).

So there is a very big chance that the old girl has done a lot more kilometers than the general condition indicated. A lesson for all.

On a normally aspirated V8, it's only a half hour job to slip off the passenger side cam cover. If you want to really get some idea of the condition of your engine, might be well worthy of a look see!!

So after a very big weekend preparing things, here's the new engine all ready to go into the car.

engine01

engine02

engine03

engine04

Problem is that the next part of the job is to get the old one out!!

Then once it is on the floor, pull off all of the UZZ32 specific parts and bolt onto the new engine. This includes the complete front cover, hydraulic pump, new water pump, new timing belt and new seals and 'O' rings where required.

Then remove the entire electrical loom from the existing engine and refit to the new engine as it has had specific modifications to run the C's Supercharger and various other electricals.

Then once all that is done it's half over. Next stage is shoehorning the great big lump back into the car.

Very very interesting with the difference in the front lobs. A lot of sludge build up, looks like the engine wasn't ever serviced before you got your hands on it.

What did the oil look like when you changed it?

The new engine looks good, you might be able to crack the 200rwkw mark with it.

If you've run a high detergent oil and you've had the engine for a while, chances are that all the sludge has been cleaned out and you might not even know if the motor was abused.

Rob, were you able to determine if it was a ring or valve problem?

when i got mine it was FULL of sludge, the oil mostly wouldn't drain it was so thick, it was thicker than honey...

I am hoping with some kero and diesel engine oil to flush it out she may start again and if not.. :-( more expense

When Neil told me to look at the oil cap on my new one I thought he was playing silly buggers and had put a brand new one on it, but he hadn't. (needs to think faster If it had been me I would've stuck a grotty old one on it!).

The oil left in that engine is so clean it could have come straight from the container
