Mmmm Yes...

Well, Err... back to the Oil topic here, I just have to say, I wish I had done it sooner! With the previous owners it was last serviced at 130,000kms. Now it has 136,200kms so I really should have done it at 135,000...

But - at least its 1/2 done now. All I have to do is find a Toyota Parts dealer with the best trade price on a Genuine Filter tomorrow, purchase it, and finally clock up 100kms or so and do the change all over again!

Ah, the joys of owning a Soarer! :-) Stuff like this really satisfies me...

Mike, if you are so adamant that the Toyota filters are superior to any other brand, then why aren't you using Toyota oil as well???

Ok guys now I hate to be picky but all of you who have posted the Toyota part number have got it wrong (or a little outdated I should say). It's not a 90915-20004 anymore, that got superseaded by 90915-YZZD2 and the V8's should use 90915-YZZD4

While your at it get a 90430-12031, as you should always change the washer on your sump plug during a service.

Spot on Mark. After getting the news that Jeff wasn't bringing the Japanese made 90915-20004 filters in to Oz anymore I went down to Nunawading Toyota and picked up a couple of 90915-YZZD4 for my V8. If anyone finds a 90915-20004 at a dealer, buy it!

Hmmmm, no problem Mark, and thanks for mentioning it.

BUT I, and my local Toyota dealer are still using the 90915 - 20004, which IS a superior filter.

But, if in the fullness of time the 90915 - YZZD2/4 IS the equivalent quality...........then I will use it.

Hmm Graham, Im only saying the Toyota Filter was much better than the Repco type. Build quality is quite different and so is the filter system inside... No big deal.. :-)

Regarding oil well, no one I know has used Toyota Branded oil. Most importantly theres plenty of recommendations and info linked to the soarer sites to what leading brand oils suit what so Ive gone for Penrite and so far very pleased with the choice... Quite a very well respected brand and Ive only heard good things about it from people that have used it in Soarers and other cars.

Anyway what really matters is just a decent oil and regular oil changes + filters. I cant really see Toyota stuff being any better than Companies that solely produce oil and other lubricants...

It only counts in things Like ATF where Toyota Stuff is the only real recommended solution for a smooth trans...

90915-20004 is still available in NZ, and the parts guy I spoke to last oil change was unaware of any plans to stop brining them in, so Don, Mike and myself are all in luck!

Mike, I think unless you are punishing your car with lots of short trips, or track days, 7,000km oil changes won't do it any harm, and will save you quite a bit of money in the long term.

Mike, don't pay any attention to me....I'm just messing with you.

But, I was thinking about what's in those toyota filters. They have a fairly thick filtering media in them, which is what impresses most people. I wonder, would running to thick an oil through them, cause oil flow problems, seeing as Toyota recommends only 5 or 10w-30???

Haha, I see. :-)

Hmm that's a rather good point you have brought up... but considering the strong oil pressure inside the car while running Id say it wouldn't really be too much of a problem to pass through a soft material type filter - but you do have a very good point... I might actually take apart the old filter and see what the Toyota filter material is like... That may give me an idea to see how permeable it is :-)

I haven't heard anything of such a problem what do you others think?

I suppose if too thick an oil was used and it caused a problem, the worse thing that could happen would be that the filter would go on bypass. Then you would have no filtering! Which is what happens if you don't change your oil and filter often enough and the filter gets clogged up.

Oh is that right? Is this common on all cars or only special ones like soarers/celsiors to have this by pass feature?

Well I just had a look at the old dirty filter material inside, didn't really prove much but under the heat and pressure of the oil I'm sure it would have no trouble going through even at the weight of the oil I have now. When I gave it a sqeaze with a screw drive pushing on it the oil seemed to come out fine - That oil was 10w-40...

The main thing is no ones complained about this so I guess its not really an issue... :-)

Anyone else have some Ideas about this possible issue?

Every engine I have worked on has had some sort of a filter bypass in it from cranky old Detroit 2 stroke diesels (that have several bypass systems-even on the heat exchanger)to modern rotors and high tech fours. The reasoning is that unfiltered oil is better than no oil at all.

Remember the oil is only unfiltered since the last time it cycled through the filter in a closed system. It is not like an air filter which filters out all the crap from outside the system to protect the system complete. This is not a licence to use rubbish oil filters, there is still a lot of contaminates produced inside the engine lubrication system that are better trapped in the filter than cycling through your engi
