ok, so had a few issues with diagnostics. Need to now check the cam belt timing but have no idea on how to go about it on my car? Also, any advice on the crank/cam shaft sensors..ie what to look for etc?
I have the klingion come up when the motor is cold, but after a bit of a drive it will do away, and intermittantly it will not come on at startup either....Im guessing it could only be the plug/sensor is on the blink?

cheers

Can't remember exactly how the V8 markings go, but generally you'll have to remove the covers so you can see the cam sprockets, then bring the car to top dead center on the crank pulley marker (0 degrees). There should be some marks on the cam sprockets that should line up with marks somewhere towards the top of the engine (should be pretty obvious). You may need to turn the motor thru 180 degrees to bring the cam markers into alignment. If all three line up correctly (cams and crank) and your timing belt is not slack, then your mechanical timing should be correct, unless there is mechanical damage somewhere.

Karl,

I'm no expert but i have just done my V8 cam belt so i'm reasonably familiar with it.

On the crank (with the pulley removed) it will look like this:

Before the pulley goes on, there is a circular metal plate with tabs sticking out that slides on. It is aligned by a key which is visible on the cog (little metal bit at about 1 o'clock on the photo).

When the crank spins the metal tabs on the plate move past a sensor which you can see on the right (little cylinder thing). I think this is the actual crank angle sensor. (it has a wire coming out the back). (Someone correct me if i'm wrong)

You may be able to get at this from under the car or by reaching around the pulley, maybe check to see if the wire is loose or something?

If the car is running fine, then i doubt the actual cam belt is out, more likely to be a sensor problem.

If you do need to check the belt:

First of all align it so that the crank is at top dead centre (mark on pulley lines up with the 0 mark on the plate). Remove the cam covers so that the two cam cogs are visible. There are little nicks in each cog, if the crank is at TDC, and the marks in the belt line up, then the lines on the belt should look like the photo below. Note that the crank can be at TDC and the cams in the correct position without the marks in the belt being in the marked spots (since the belt doesn't do an equal revolution compared the engine, the marks will just line up every x rotations)

To check for sure, get the belt marks as per the photo.

(You can see the little marks in the reflection in the mirror in the top picture). The belt needs to be in this position with the drilled out hole in the cog between the two white marks. At the other end, the two cam cogs should be aligned with marks on the belt meeting the nicks the cam cogs.

Good luck!
