Hi all.. Went to start my uzz31 the other morning and it was running extremely rough, plooming out white smoke, and also gave me the engine electrical system warning when i started it.

I've changed the plugs, and changed the fuel, reset the computer and checked a few others and i have come to the conclusion that the top coil pack must be on its way out. The bottom coil pack still delivers a strong spark where as the top coil pack is only delivering a small spark in comparison to the other side.

My question is, do the coil packs do this when they are on their way out, or is there something more sinister behind this? I changed the plugs about 10,000km ago to the denso toyota ones and i've just put in a new set of ngk iridiums to see if the plugs had fouled.

I drove the car last thursday night and it was working fine and never missed a beat. so i know i'm up for a new coil, (i'll probably replace them both and keep the other one as a spare), but what causes them to do that? could my ECU be on its way too?

Cheers, Luke

ok discovered its not a coil pack.. If I unplug the right hand coil, it still runs the same, however, if i unplug the left hand coil, the engine dies. the right hand coil is still firing though.

any suggestions?

Just thought i'd add that it does smell fuelie too

If you unplug the right hand coil pack and it runs the same, then I'd tend to think that the right hand coil pack was rooted.

found the igniters, and its not them. swapped the igniters over and it still acted exactly the same way.

swapped the leads over from the coil packs to the rotor buttons, and it still acted exactly the same way.

Could the ECU be playing up?

ok.. not too sure what happened, however, on tuesday night, i decided i'd charge the battery up before i went away, so that it would be nice and fully charged for the auto elecy on friday.

Started, and ran without any dramas what so ever. Blew some smoke, which would have been all the fuel that would have been dumped into the exhaust while it was crook, but running great.

so mabey thats all the problem was, as the car had been sitting for about a week, without being run.. (mind you, its sat for longer than that before without any troubles) Mabey the battery wasn't supplying the ECU with enough grunt to start the car properly. who knows, but who cares. she seems fixed... for now..

Time for a new battery perhaps? Though if the alternator is good it should still run fine once its started.

It is a Brand new battery. what has me beat, is that it was cranking over fine! normally when a battery is going flat, its sluggish, but it sounded good still.

who knows. mabey its another feature that toyota put into the soarers. the ability to fix themselves!

I had the same problem 2 years ago, changed the coil packs, leads, plugs, and rotor button on drivers side and fixed it, search for 1UZ sounding like WRX or something similar
